The Role: Lighting and Shading Artist (Unreal Engine)

We are looking for a full-time Lighting and Shading Artist (all genders) who possesses deep expertise in the Unreal Engine. The ideal candidate is characterized by an excellent eye for detail, profound technical knowledge of Epic’s Unreal Engine, and the ability to work independently within complex CGI pipelines. Experience in photography or as a Director of Photography (DOP) is a distinct advantage.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be instrumental in the visual execution of high-end projects, with a focus on optimization and aesthetic fidelity:

  • Visual Quality Assurance:
    Work on challenging projects for premium clients, consistently delivering the highest standards of visual quality and aesthetics.
  • Asset Optimization:
    Develop, manage, and optimize 3D assets specifically within the Unreal Engine for high-quality stills and cinematics, ensuring all assets meet required real-time performance specifications.
  • Shading & Lighting Setup:
    Take ownership of setting up and fine-tuning complex shaders and lighting configurations within Unreal Engine to achieve optimal performance and outstanding visual results.
  • Artistic Alignment:
    Take responsibility for the visual and technical quality of all assigned assets, ensuring strict alignment with the Art Director’s creative vision.
  • Pipeline Enhancement:
    Collaborate closely with our internal development team to continuously improve and enhance our existing CG pipeline and departmental workflows.
  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively within a growing, highly motivated team of CG artists to meet ambitious project goals.

Required Qualifications and Expertise

  • Experience:
    A minimum of 4 years of production experience is required, ideally within the field of automotive visualization utilizing the Unreal Engine.
  • Unreal Engine Proficiency:
    Proven experience as a lighting and shading artist working extensively with Unreal Engine and traditional tools such as Maya, 3DS Max, or V-Ray.
  • PBR Workflow:
    Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing physically based rendering (PBR) materials within the Unreal Engine.
  • Pipeline Understanding:
    Deep familiarity with complex CGI pipelines and industry-standard workflows.
  • Passion:
    A profound passion for creating high-quality visualizations and engagement with automotive projects.
  • Work Style:
    Ability to work independently with a structured, solution-oriented mindset; capable of effective prioritization through strong organizational skills and excellent time management.
  • Language Skills:
    Very good English skills (spoken and written) and very good German skills are mandatory.
  • Technical Competence:
    Understanding and competence in digital infrastructures, including website rollout, maintenance, support, and information security.
