The DNEG Lighting Department: Sculpting Light, Defining Mood

The role of a Lighting Artist at DNEG is critical and deeply artistic. You are the architect of the mood, atmosphere, and dramatic impact of every shot. Your expertise transforms raw 3D assets into visually stunning cinematic moments. We seek individuals who have a profound understanding of the physics of light, color theory, and photographic principles.

• Advanced Rendering:
  • Mastery of industry-leading rendering engines (e.g., Arnold, Redshift) and DNEG’s proprietary pipeline tools, with a focus on efficiency and quality.
• Scene Assembly & Optimization:
  • Proficiency in scene setup using tools like Katana or Maya, ensuring environments are optimized for high-volume rendering while maintaining artistic integrity.
• Aesthetic Judgment:
  • The ability to make sophisticated artistic choices regarding key light, fill light, rim light, reflections, and shadows to enhance storytelling and meet the Director’s vision.
• Troubleshooting:
  • Expert ability to diagnose and solve complex technical rendering issues, including deep color space management, shadow artifacts, and complex material properties.
• Collaboration:
  • Working closely with the Asset, Layout, and Compositing teams to ensure a smooth, end-to-end workflow, ensuring the final output is both technically sound and creatively compelling.

The Compositing Artist is the final crucial link in the VFX chain, responsible for weaving together all the disparate elements—the live action plate, the CG characters, the environments, the particles, and the volumetric effects—into a single, cohesive, and utterly believable image. Your role is where the magic truly happens, blending the real with the fantastic to achieve absolute photorealism.

Core Responsibilities and Expertise We Look For:

• Nuke Mastery:
  • Expert-level proficiency in Foundry Nuke, including advanced knowledge of scripting (Python/TCL), tracking, keying, roto, paint, and color grading.
• Photorealism:
  • A superior understanding of color space, grain structure, depth of field, lens flares, and the subtle imperfections that make an image feel real.
• Problem-Solving:
  • The capacity to tackle challenging integration tasks, such as complex green screen extractions, multi-layered CG integration, and challenging matte painting projections.
• Speed and Efficiency:
  • The ability to work quickly and meticulously under tight deadlines while maintaining the highest artistic and technical standards.
• Final Polish:
  • Responsible for the final look, ensuring continuity across sequences and working hand-in-hand with the VFX Supervisor and Director to realize the final creative vision.
