The Role: Mastering the Art of Creature Animation
Digital Domain is seeking elite Senior Creature Animators to join our team for an immediate start. This is not a role for generalists; we are looking for specialists who live and breathe creature work.
Whether it is the heavy, ground-shaking thud of a quadruped or the agile, predatory movement of a bipedal beast, you understand that great animation starts with a deep understanding of physics and biology.
As a Senior at Digital Domain, you won’t just be “moving rigs.” You will be breathe life into complex entities, ensuring that every muscle twitch, weight shift, and breath feels grounded in reality.
You will work on high-end VFX film projects that require the highest level of fidelity, contributing to the “wow” moments that define the modern movie-going experience.
What You’ll Be Doing at Digital Domain
1. High-End Performance & Mechanics
Your primary focus at Digital Domain will be executing top-tier creature animation. This involves:
- Anatomy-Driven Motion: Utilizing your deep knowledge of skeletal and muscular systems to ensure that movement looks biologically plausible.
- Weight and Physics: Mastering the “feel” of a creature. You will be responsible for ensuring that a five-ton dragon feels as heavy as it looks, and a rapid-moving predator maintains its momentum through complex environments.
- Locomotion Excellence: Crafting seamless cycles and bespoke performances for quadrupeds, bipeds, and everything in between.
2. Collaborative Production
Animation at Digital Domain is a team sport. You will:
- Work with Animation Leads: Take direction and iterate on shots to meet the specific vision of the Director and VFX Supervisor.
- Integrate with Pipelines: Collaborate with Rigging and Creature FX departments to ensure that the character assets are performing optimally and to provide feedback on rig functionality.
- Shot Ownership: Take responsibility for complex sequences, ensuring that the performance remains consistent across the entire project.
3. Mentorship and Standard Setting
As a Senior member of the Digital Domain crew, you are a lighthouse for the team:
- Guidance: Support junior and mid-level animators by sharing your expertise in creature mechanics and troubleshooting technical hurdles.
- Innovation: Help refine the Digital Domain animation pipeline by identifying more efficient ways to achieve high-fidelity results.
What Digital Domain is Looking For

- VFX Film Experience: You have a proven track record of working on major motion pictures. You understand the pace, the quality bar, and the specific requirements of a high-end VFX pipeline.
- Creature Specialty: Your demo reel should be a masterclass in creature work. We want to see quadrupeds with believable weight, bipeds with unique personalities, and movement that demonstrates a mastery of anatomy.
- Technical Proficiency: Expert-level knowledge of Maya is a given. Experience with proprietary tools and a deep understanding of the integration between animation and creature FX (fur, cloth, muscle simulation) is highly valued.
- ASAP Availability: This is an “ASAP Start” role. We are looking for artists who are ready to jump into production immediately and hit the ground running.
Crucial Eligibility Requirements:
- Location: You must be currently located in British Columbia, Canada. This is a remote role, but for tax and provincial credit purposes, candidates must be BC residents.
