About One Man Studio
In an industry defined by rapid evolution, One Man Studio stands as a pillar of stability and creative excellence. We specialize in high-fidelity visual development and production-ready art assets that enable our partners to ship record-breaking, world-class titles.
Our studio culture is built on a dual foundation: we value the unique, individual voice of the artist while maintaining the rigorous standards required for large-scale, high-stakes production. When you join our team, you are not just contributing to a game; you are defining the aesthetic landscape of the next generation of interactive entertainment.
The Role & Impact
As a Senior Environment Concept Artist, you will be expected to do more than follow a brief. You will interrogate concepts, expand upon them, and provide visual solutions that are simultaneously breathtaking and functional. You will work directly with Art Directors to establish the “DNA” of our worlds, ensuring that every location—from a sprawling futuristic megacity to a quiet, overgrown ruin—tells a compelling story without a single word of dialogue.
Core Responsibilities as Senior Environment Concept Artist
1. Environment Concept Creation & Worldbuilding
- Immersive Location Design: Your primary focus will be the creation of immersive spaces, ranging from macro-level world spaces (skyboxes, horizons, and landmarks) to micro-level details (set pieces, props, and interior layouts).
- Architectural Language: You will establish the visual rules of the world. Whether it is determining the specific hinges on a fantasy door or how lighting reflects off a sci-fi hull, your work provides the definitive answers to these worldbuilding questions.
2. Narrative & Gameplay Integration
- Storytelling Through Art: We believe environment art is a primary storytelling tool. You will collaborate with Narrative Designers to ensure environments reflect the deep history and lore of the space.
- Functional Design: You will work with Level Designers to ensure concepts respect “player pathing” and gameplay mechanics, facilitating a seamless player experience.
3. Production-Ready Handoffs
- Eliminating Ambiguity: You will create detailed production callouts, orthographic views, and material breakdowns to assist 3D artists.
- Iterative Support: You will perform “paintovers” on existing 3D blockouts to push visual quality during critical mid-production phases.
4. Visual Development & Atmosphere
- Mood Establishment: You will explore weather cycles, lighting, and atmospheric effects to define the tone of key locations.
- Emotional Resonance: Using color theory and composition, you will evoke specific emotional responses, whether representing the oppressive humidity of a jungle or the sterile cold of a moon base.
5. Leadership & Mentorship
- Team Guidance: You will act as a “lighthouse” for junior and mid-level artists, participating in critiques and sharing advanced workflows.
- Culture Building: You will help cultivate a studio culture centered on growth, curiosity, and technical mastery.
Technical Requirements
- Industry Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience, specifically focused on environment concept art within the games industry.
- Proven Track Record: At least one shipped AA or AAA title is required. You must understand the “end-to-end” production cycle, from “blue sky” ideation to final optimization.
- Artistic Mastery: A deep, fundamental understanding of perspective, composition, value, and color. You must be able to render various materials (stone, metal, organic matter) with high levels of realism.
- Software Proficiency: Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is essential; familiarity with Procreate or similar digital painting tools is expected.
- 3D Integration: Proficiency in incorporating 3D workflows—such as Blender blockouts, Unreal Engine lighting references, or kitbashing—is required to ensure spatial accuracy.
Portfolio Expectations
One Man Studio value the creative process as much as the final result. Your portfolio should demonstrate:
- Variety: A diverse mix of interiors, exteriors, and large-scale vistas.
- “Think Work”: We want to see the “messy” parts, including early sketches, mood boards, and discarded ideas to see how you solve problems.
- Technicality: Include production sheets, architectural studies, and callouts that show you understand how structures or machines actually function.
- Narrative Strength: Pieces that showcase environmental storytelling, such as a lived-in room or a recently abandoned battlefield.
Nice-to-Have Attributes
- Experience with Open-World design and the challenges of “any-angle” visibility.
- A professional background in industrial design or architecture.
- Experience in Unreal Engine 5, specifically with Lumen and Nanite workflows.
- Advanced knowledge of cinematic lighting and camera composition.
Success & Benefits
What Success Looks Like: In your first six months, you will have integrated into the pipeline, established rapport with the 3D team, and become a “go-to” resource for solving complex visual puzzles. Your work will serve as the benchmark for atmospheric quality across our current projects.
Why One Man Studio?
- Work-Life Balance: We offer a fully remote environment that respects your personal time. We believe rested artists are inspired artists.
- Comprehensive Benefits: Includes health insurance, a generous equipment budget for your home studio, and annual performance bonuses based on project milestones.
Application Process
To apply, please submit your CV and a link to your portfolio. Our process involves:
- Initial Interview: A meeting with our Art Lead.
- Portfolio Review: A deep dive with the Art Director.
- Art Test: A paid test may be requested depending on the depth of your existing portfolio.
