KeyFrame Animator Job Summary

The Role

This is not your average animation gig. We are looking for artists who think in terms of traditional, CG feature-film quality. You understand that great animation is not just about making a character move from Point A to Point B; it is about bringing that character to life, giving them a soul, and making the audience feel what they are feeling.

As a KeyFrame Animator at Waterproof Studios, you will be responsible for creating high-caliber, character-driven animation. You will work closely with Animation Directors and Supervisors to implement the artistic vision of our projects, ensuring that the performances are nuanced, believable, and technically flawless.

Key Responsibilities

• Character Performance: Craft high-quality, performance-driven keyframe animation for a diverse cast of characters, focusing on acting, subtle facial expressions, weight, and body mechanics.
• Storytelling Through Movement: Interpret storyboards, animatics, and director notes to deliver shots that effectively communicate the narrative and emotional beats of the scene.
• Collaboration & Iteration: Work collaboratively within a tight-knit team environment. Incorporate feedback from leads and directors seamlessly, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to excellence.
• Technical Proficiency: Maintain clean files and adhere to studio pipelines, ensuring that animation data transitions smoothly to downstream departments like lighting and VFX.
• Problem Solving: Proactively identify and resolve technical or artistic challenges within your shots, keeping production timelines on track.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for masters of the craft. To excel in this role, you must be highly proficient in the following core areas:

• Feature-Film Quality Aesthetic: A strong, demonstrable portfolio that showcases an understanding of traditional CG feature-film principles—including timing, spacing, arcs, anticipation, and staging.
• Autodesk Maya Mastery: High proficiency in Maya is a strict requirement. You should know the software inside and out, utilizing its tools to maximize your creative output efficiently.
• Character-Driven Focus: A deep understanding of acting and anatomy. You can convey subtext, sub-surface thought, and complex emotional arcs through a character’s physical behavior.
• Strong Eye for Detail: From the weight of a heavy stomp to the micro-expressions of a character’s eyes, you possess an uncompromising eye for polish and detail.
