Flying Bark Productions is an industry-leading animation studio known for pushing the boundaries of character-driven storytelling. From the epic world of Avatar: The Last Airbender (Feature Film) to high-profile series like Netflix’s Ghostbusters and Stranger Things, we tackle the most exciting projects in global animation.
We are looking for a highly skilled Asset Technical Director to join our Sydney team. In this role, you will be the bridge between artistry and technology, ensuring our asset pipelines are robust, efficient, and capable of delivering world-class visuals.
The Role
As an Asset TD, you will troubleshoot, develop, and optimize the technical workflows that power our production. You will collaborate across departments—from Modeling and Grooming to Lighting and Compositing—to ensure a seamless integration of assets while maintaining the highest technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Pipeline Innovation: Develop and maintain sophisticated tools to streamline asset creation, management, and deployment.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Debug complex issues within the asset pipeline, focusing on performance optimization and rendering stability.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Partner with Modeling, Texturing, and Lighting leads to ensure assets are production-ready and technically sound.
- Creative Translation: Interpret verbal and visual briefs into technical requirements and actionable workflows.
- Proactive Problem Solving: Anticipate potential bottlenecks in production and implement preemptive technical solutions.
- Project Management: Self-manage tasks within tight deadlines and communicate technical hurdles effectively to stakeholders.
Your Profile
- Industry Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in high-end feature film VFX and/or Animation.
- Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Maya, Katana, MARI, and Nuke. (Houdini experience is a significant bonus).
- Programming Skills: Advanced Python skills are essential; experience with Katana LUA is highly regarded.
- Rendering Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Arnold (or similar path-tracing renderers) and a sophisticated understanding of shading networks.
- Pipeline Knowledge: A thorough understanding of the full animation lifecycle (Modeling through to Compositing). Familiarity with Shotgrid API/Toolkit is a plus.
- Leadership Qualities: Proven ability to support and mentor junior team members while maintaining positive team dynamics.
