The Role: Crafting the Future of Gaming

The Senior Character Artist is a bridge between the conceptual and the functional. You will work in a fast-paced, iterative environment where the priorities of a project can evolve rapidly.

Core Responsibilities

  1. High-Fidelity Asset Creation: Sculpt and model detailed 3D assets ranging from organic characters to complex hard-surface vehicles and props. You must be equally comfortable in both stylized and photorealistic art styles.
  2. Leadership & Mentorship: You are expected to be a pillar of the character department. This involves mentoring junior and mid-level artists, providing constructive feedback, and helping document studio workflows.
  3. Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work intimately with the Animation and Technical Art teams. You must ensure that your topology is “animation-ready” and that your materials/textures are fully optimized for real-time performance without sacrificing visual fidelity.
  4. Innovation & Research: Stay at the forefront of the industry. You will continually research new tools (such as AI-assisted texturing or advanced cloth simulation) to determine how they can be integrated into Blizzard’s proprietary pipelines.

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Industry Tenure: A minimum of 12 years of professional experience in 3D modeling and texturing within the gaming industry.
  • AAA Track Record: Proven experience having shipped at least two AAA game titles in a character-focused capacity.
  • Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Maya (modeling/layout), ZBrush (high-poly sculpting), Marvelous Designer (cloth simulation), and Substance Painter (PBR texturing).
  • Anatomical Mastery: A deep, fundamental understanding of human and animal anatomy, form, silhouette, and proportion.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Shading & Texturing: Strong skills in PBR (Physically Based Rendering) and BSDF shading. You should understand how light interacts with surfaces at a technical level.
  • Topology for Deformation: You must understand how character topology affects rigging and skeletal deformation to prevent “pinching” or “volume loss” during movement.
  • Academic Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, or a related field is preferred.

Preferred “Extra Points”

  • Engine Expertise: Extensive experience in Unreal Engine or Unity, specifically regarding material editor and character integration.
  • Technical Art Skills: Knowledge of Python or MEL to automate repetitive modeling tasks.
  • Hair/Fur: Familiarity with creating performant, real-time hair (hair cards or strand-based solutions).
  • External Development: Experience working with and managing external outsourcing partners.

  • Racial Representation: Our workforce in the U.S. reflects a growing diversity, with approximately 36% of employees identifying as members of underrepresented racial or ethnic groups (including Asian, Black, and Hispanic/Latinx professionals).
  • The “Confidence Gap”: Research shows that women and underrepresented groups often only apply if they meet 100% of the criteria. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every single “Extra Point” listed. We value potential and unique perspectives as much as technical expertise.
