The Role: Technical Designer
As a Mid-Level Technical Designer, you will be a bridge-builder. You will be responsible for the design, prototyping, and implementation of interactive gameplay systems and mechanics that leverage the full power of Unreal Engine 5’s latest technology.
You will work within a multi-skilled team comprised of experts from animation, art, and design backgrounds. Your mission is to ensure that interactive assets function flawlessly from a technical perspective while maintaining the high visual bar our studio is known for.
Key Responsibilities and Workflows
1. System Design and Prototyping
- Technical Prototyping: Use Blueprint visual scripting to iterate rapidly on new gameplay mechanics, taking them from concept to a “production-ready” state.
- Complex Systems: Build and maintain interactive gameplay systems that are scalable and easy for the wider Design team to utilize.
- Performance Focus: Work closely with the Engineering team to ensure that systems leverage the best use of C++ classes, components, and functions, always adhering to industry best practices.
2. Visual Integration and Artistry
- Animation and Rigging: Utilize your understanding of keyframe animation principles to rig and animate interactive elements within UE5, Maya, or Blender.
- Scene Composition: Apply a keen eye for detail to object and scene composition, ensuring that technical implementations do not compromise the artistic vision of the project.
- Interactive Fidelity: Ensure that every lever, door, or complex mechanic feels “right” to the player through careful attention to timing and visual feedback.
3. Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Liaison: Act as the technical translator between the creative Art/Design teams and the Technical/Engineering teams.
- Documentation: (Bonus) Create clear, concise documentation for new tools and workflows to ensure the team can work efficiently.
- Problem Solving: Proactively identify pipeline bottlenecks and technical hurdles, thinking “outside the box” to find elegant solutions.
10:10 Games need a proactive team player who is user-focused and possesses a deep technical curiosity.
Professional Requirements
- Unreal Project Experience: You have professional experience working as a Technical Designer on at least one shipped or significant Unreal-based project.
- Blueprint Mastery: You are highly confident in Blueprint visual scripting and understand how to build complex logic without sacrificing performance.
- Art and Animation Proficiency: You understand keyframe animation principles and are comfortable rigging and animating in industry-standard tools like Maya or Blender.
- Design Sensibility: You have a proven ability to design and prototype interactive mechanics that are fun, intuitive, and technically sound.
- Communication: Strong cross-team communication skills are essential; you must be able to explain technical constraints to artists and artistic requirements to engineers.
Bonus Skills (The “Extra Mile”)
- C++ Knowledge: A basic understanding of programming fundamentals in C++ to better collaborate with the Engineering team.
- Technical Art: Experience with Materials, PCG (Procedural Content Generation), or Niagara particle systems.
- Profiling: Hands-on experience with UE5’s platform profiling tools to optimize game performance.
- Detail-Oriented: A genuine interest in Art and scene composition that allows you to elevate the visual quality of interactive props.
