As a Junior Technical Designer, you will be a vital link between the creative and technical departments. You will be responsible for the design, prototyping, and implementation of interactive gameplay elements and mechanics, leveraging the cutting-edge capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.

You will join a multi-skilled Technical Designer—a unique group composed of staff with backgrounds in animation, art, and design. This team exists to ensure that our interactive assets don’t just function perfectly; they must also look visually outstanding.

Key Responsibilities and Workflows : Technical Designer

1. Prototyping and Implementation

  • Blueprint Scripting: Use UE5’s Blueprint visual scripting system to build functional prototypes for mechanics and interactive elements.
  • Mechanical Design: Take a design brief and turn it into a working system, focusing on how a player interacts with the world.
  • Collaboration with Engineering: Work closely with the Code and Engineering teams to ensure your systems use the best C++ classes, components, and functions, keeping best practices and performance at the forefront.

2. Visual and Technical Synergy

  • Asset Integration: Ensure that interactive assets (props, environmental triggers, etc.) are implemented correctly, maintaining a high standard of visual fidelity.
  • Animation Logic: Apply basic animation principles to gameplay mechanics to ensure movement and interactions feel fluid and responsive.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and solve technical issues within the design pipeline, ensuring a smooth hand-off between departments.

3. Communication and Documentation

  • Cross-Team Liaison: Work with the Design and Art teams to ensure all systems meet the project’s specifications.
  • Iterative Design: Be prepared to think “outside the box” to solve gameplay challenges, iterating based on feedback from playtests and leads.

What We Are Looking For Technical Designer role

We are looking for a proactive, user-focused individual who is passionate about the “how” and “why” behind gameplay mechanics.

Core Requirements

  • Scripting Experience: You have a working knowledge of Blueprint visual scripting (or a similar logic-based system) demonstrated through personal or university projects.
  • Prototyping Skills: The ability to design and build interactive gameplay mechanics from scratch.
  • Animation Foundations: A basic understanding of animation principles and experience using UE5, Maya, or Blender.
  • Detail-Oriented: A keen eye for detail, ensuring that assets are not only functional but polished.
  • Problem-Solving Mindset: A pro-active team player who can take direction, follow clear briefs, and solve technical hurdles creatively.

  • Rigging & Animation: Specific knowledge or interest in rigging with working examples.
  • Material Knowledge: A basic understanding of how materials and shaders work within a game engine.
