Your Mission: Leading the Light

As the Lighting Supervisor, you are the technical and creative engine of the department. You are responsible for ensuring that the final “look” of our animated projects meets the prestigious standards our clients expect.

Your leadership style will define the success of the lighting team. You will:

  • Direct Supervision: Lead the lighting team by communicating clear objectives, fostering a culture of high performance, and mentoring junior artists to reach their full potential.
  • Conflict Resolution: Act as a mediator and listener, ensuring a healthy, collaborative, and focused studio environment.
  • Skill Development: Identify talent gaps and provide the necessary guidance to ensure every artist is performing at their peak.

2. Creative Vision & Translation

You act as the primary bridge between the Art Director’s imagination and the final render. Your duties include:

  • Artistic Interpretation: Taking notes, sketches, and style guides from the Art Director and translating them into a lighting base that fits the project’s unique aesthetic.
  • Consistency Oversight: Maintaining artistic consistency across entire sequences, ensuring that lighting transitions are seamless and logically sound within the story.
  • Technical Integration: Combining and integrating visual elements from Surfacing, FX, and Compositing to create a complete, polished scene.

3. Pipeline & Technical Excellence

Innovation is a core value at Illusorium. You will:

  • Pipeline Management: In close collaboration with our Technical Directors (TDs), you will keep the lighting pipeline updated, focusing on efficiency and the adoption of cutting-edge tools.
  • Workflow Optimization: Fully supervise the processes of creating lighting sequences, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing solutions to streamline production.
  • Mastery of Tools: Utilize Houdini (specifically Solaris and USD workflows) and Arnold to achieve industry-leading results.

4. Hands-on Production

While you are a leader, you remain an artist at heart. When production demands it, you will roll up your sleeves and compose final scenes, setting the standard for the rest of the team.

What We Look For in a Supervisor

We aren’t just looking for a technician; we are looking for a mentor and a strategist.

  • Technical Depth: You must have extensive knowledge of the entire 3D Animation production pipeline. You understand how assets move from modeling and surfacing into lighting, and eventually to compositing.
  • Houdini Expertise: High-level mastery of Houdini, with specific expertise in Solaris, USD, and Arnold. You should be comfortable navigating complex node-based environments and managing massive datasets.
  • Supervisory Experience: At least two years in a formal supervisory or lead position within a 3D animation studio. You have a proven track record of delivering high-quality sequences on schedule.
  • Problem Solving: The ability to solve complex technical problems quickly and efficiently is non-negotiable. You are the final point of escalation for lighting issues.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English are required to interface with our diverse internal team and global clients.

Detailed Responsibilities & Workflow

The Lighting Supervisor role at Illusorium Studios is a comprehensive position that touches every part of the final production phase.

  1. Look Development Collaboration: You will work alongside the Surfacing Supervisor to ensure that textures and materials react correctly to light, establishing the visual “DNA” of the project early in production.
  2. Sequence Keylighting: You will be responsible for creating “Key Shots” that serve as the lighting template for entire sequences, ensuring that the lighting artists have a clear roadmap to follow.
  3. Cross-Departmental Synergy: You will act as a key collaborator with the Compositing Supervisor to ensure that the lighting renders provide all the necessary AOVs and layers required for a high-quality final comp.
  4. Resource Management: You will assist production management in assessing the time and resources required for lighting tasks, helping to manage the render farm and hardware allocation efficiently.
