3. About Industrial Light & Magic (ILM Sydney)
Founded by George Lucas in 1975, ILM has been the global leader in visual effects for over five decades. Our work is synonymous with cinematic innovation, having contributed to over 325 feature films. Our track record includes:
- Market Dominance: Contributions to 7 of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.
- Innovation: Leading the industry in VR, AR, and Immersive Cinema technologies.
- Global Reach: The Sydney studio in Moore Park is a vital hub in our international network, working on major theatrical and streaming productions.
4. Detailed Role Description
The Groom Artist is a hybrid professional—equal parts technical architect and digital sculptor. You are responsible for the aesthetic and structural integrity of a creature’s surface. Whether creating the sleek fur of a realistic animal or the complex feather patterns of a fantasy beast, your work must withstand the scrutiny of high-resolution rendering and complex physics simulations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Technical Grooming: Execute high-quality hair, fur, and feather grooms using a blend of industry-standard tools (XGen, Houdini) and ILM’s bespoke proprietary software.
- Creative Asset Development: Build assets from concept art and high-resolution reference photography, ensuring every groom is biologically plausible and artistically aligned with the director’s vision.
- Optimization: Develop grooms that are “simulation-ready,” meaning they must be technically robust enough for the Creature TD team to apply dynamics without breaking the asset.
- Surface Painting: Paint detailed color, specular, and auxiliary maps that define the variation in hair color and shine, integrating these directly into shading networks.
- Inter-Departmental Synergy: Collaborate daily with the Modelling, Animation, and Lighting departments to ensure assets transition smoothly through the pipeline.
5. Required Skills & Technical Competencies
To be considered for this elite team, candidates must demonstrate a high level of mastery in the following areas:
- VFX Pedigree: At least 5 years of experience within a high-end VFX facility working on feature films or premium episodic content.
- Portfolio Excellence: A world-class demo reel that features high-fidelity creature grooms, digital doubles, and feather simulations.
- Technical Rapid Adoption: The ability to quickly master ILM’s proprietary toolsets and adapt to highly complex, multi-layered pipelines.
- Anatomical Knowledge: A profound understanding of how hair and fur grow in nature, including clumping, shedding, and movement patterns.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to navigate the feedback loops of a global studio environment.
6. Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with the following additional skills will be prioritized during the review process:
- Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Foundry Mari, and Pixologic ZBrush.
- Versatility: Experience in texture painting, surfacing, or look development that complements your grooming work.
- Project Management: Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to track asset versions and manage personal productivity under tight deadlines.
7. Education and Artistic Foundations
ILM values the “traditional” in “digital.” Our most successful Groom Artists come from a background of formal art training.
- Academic Requirement: A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Animation, or Computer Graphics.
- Artistic Skills: Proficiency in figure drawing, concept illustration, and an understanding of natural form and anatomy.
8. Diversity and Inclusion Statement
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM Sydney) and Lucasfilm are equal-opportunity employers. We are committed to a diverse workforce and provide equal consideration regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability. We believe that a variety of perspectives drives the innovation required to create the world’s greatest stories.
