Detailed Job Description: The Role of a 2D FX Animator
The primary objective of the 2D FX Animator is to bridge the gap between initial animatics and the final, polished animation. You will work under the direct guidance of the Animation Director, FX Supervisor, and FX Lead to ensure that every frame of effects animation aligns with the production’s specific tone and stylistic requirements.
1. Artistic Execution & Design
- Style Adaptability: You will study animatics and reference materials to develop a deep understanding of each show’s unique tone. Whether the project requires “snappy” graphic effects or fluid, realistic simulations, you will adapt your drawing style accordingly.
- FX Design: You will design effects—including fire, water, smoke, magic, and explosions—while keeping color theory, scale, and technical specifications at the forefront of your process.
- Creative Problem Solving: When a sequence presents a unique challenge, you will propose and execute creative solutions that maintain the high standards of the production.
2. Pipeline & Workflow Management
- Efficiency & Organization: Maintaining an organized file structure is vital. You will follow strict naming conventions and production systems to ensure seamless integration into the studio’s pipeline.
- Resource Management: You will utilize established FX concepts and video libraries while identifying opportunities to reuse existing assets where appropriate to maximize efficiency.
- Deadline Adherence: Boulder Media moves at a high tempo. You will be responsible for hitting weekly quotas and ensuring all retakes are completed to the highest standard within the production schedule.
3. Continuous Development
The animation industry is constantly evolving. As part of your role in Boulder Media Jobs, you are encouraged to stay updated with the latest software initiatives, learning and development programs, and mentoring opportunities provided by the studio.
Candidate Requirements: What We Look For
We are searching for an artist who possesses the “Boulder Spirit”—hardworking, collaborative, and detail-oriented.
- Essential Experience: Prior experience in 2D FX Animation is a must. You must provide a showreel and portfolio that clearly demonstrates your mastery of movement, timing, and hand-drawn effects.
- Core Skills: A strong grasp of FX animation fundamentals (squash and stretch, follow-through, arcs, and weight).
- Technical Drawing: Solid traditional drawing skills are essential for creating believable 2D effects.
- Language: Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required for effective communication within our international team.
- Interpersonal Skills: You must be able to take direction well, implement feedback positively, and contribute to a healthy team dynamic.
