Position Scope & Cinematic Philosophy
Cinematics at Blizzard are not mere passive interruptions to gameplay; they are foundational pillars that define our characters, enrich our lore, and contextualize player agency. On an unannounced project, the Senior Cinematic Designer’s responsibility transitions from standard asset assembly into high-level visual R&D.
You will analyze how camera angles, environment staging, and micro-expressions influence emotional resonance, ensuring that cinematic continuity bridges into gameplay smoothly. This requires a balanced technical and artistic mindset: a creator who can debate the nuances of three-point lighting, screen direction, and lens compression while simultaneously executing complex scripting logic within a cutting-edge proprietary or commercial game engine.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hands-on Visual Authoring & Pre-Visualization
- Storyboard to Completion: Directly execute the technical and artistic task of taking narrative concepts, layouts, and static storyboards and transforming them into fully animated, high-fidelity cinematic sequences.
- Cinematographic Execution: Apply expert-level mastery of advanced cinematography principles—including lens selection, framing rules, character blocking, spatial staging, pacing, and continuity editing—to ensure every sequence commands player attention.
- Pipeline Innovation: Establish, validate, and document lines of iterative prototyping methodologies that help the team transition rapidly from rough pre-visualization (pre-vis) animatics to final, production-ready assets.
2. Cross-Disciplinary Integration & Risk Mitigation
- Multi-Departmental Synchronization: Partner closely with Art and Narrative Directors while serving as a central hub for Design, Engineering, Surfacing, Character Art, VFX, Lighting, and Audio branches to integrate assets correctly into the engine.
- Engine Integration: Manage the structural implementation and downstream testing of cinematic files within a AAA game engine environment, maintaining strict asset organization and runtime stability.
- Proactive Risk Management: Identify production vulnerabilities, pipeline friction, or performance bottlenecks early within the cinematic creation lifecycle; design and propose elegant technical solutions to maintain high visual quality within budget constraints.
3. Culture Stewardship & Strategic Development
- Team-Oriented Leadership: Foster an open, highly collaborative workspace built on transparent communication, mutual creative respect, and robust cross-departmental alignment.
- Inspire and Elevate: Actively inspire fellow developers through an enthusiastic approach to game development, setting a high aesthetic standard and demonstrating a continuous commitment to upskilling.
- Industry Trend Analysis: Stay constantly informed regarding emerging industry trends, including breakthroughs in real-time virtual production, modern commercial engine tooling, and machine-learning workflow efficiencies.
Requirements for Designers
To succeed at Blizzard as a senior creative leader, you must demonstrate a deep history of shipping elite interactive content, complemented by refined interpersonal skills.
Core Experience & Portfolio
- Industry Experience: 8+ years of dedicated professional experience specializing in game cinematics, virtual production, or real-time layout design specifically within the AAA video game sector.
- Proven Track Record: Confirmed industry credit, having successfully shipped at least one major, commercially recognized AAA title in a relevant cinematic, layout, or design position.
- Comprehensive Portfolio: A strong digital portfolio or showreel featuring detailed breakdowns that clearly explain your practical contributions across framing, staging, asset assembly, and camera work.
Technical & Artistry Profile
- AAA Engine Competency: Expert-level proficiency utilizing major AAA game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity, or complex proprietary studio environments), with a solid grasp of how cinematics interface with real-time gameplay logic and streaming systems.
- 3D Workflow Mastery: Advanced knowledge of industry-standard 3D animation packages (e.g., Maya, MotionBuilder, 3ds Max) alongside non-linear editing (NLE) suites.
- Cinematography & Composition: Deep understanding of camera movement, lenses, character staging, lighting interactions, color theory, geometric balance, and human form composition.
Preferred Pluses
- Early-Stage Incubation (R&D): Direct experience working within the highly ambiguous, early-development R&D phases of a project, shaping an unannounced game’s visual or structural framework from scratch.
- Macroscopic Game Design Knowledge: A solid technical understanding of development disciplines outside of cinematic art, specifically Lighting, Visual Effects, Character Rigging, Core Animation pipelines, and Audio Engineering.
- Filmmaking Roots: A foundational interest or academic background in professional photography, practical filmmaking, and traditional live-action cinema.
- Gamer Mindset: An authentic passion for playing a broad, diverse cross-section of interactive titles across multiple genres and platforms.
