The Heart of Guerrilla: Quest Design
The Quest Design Team at Guerrilla Games is a multidisciplinary powerhouse. We sit at the intersection of gameplay and story, acting as the glue that binds the narrative vision to the mechanical player experience. We don’t just “make missions”—we build emotional arcs, tense combat scenarios, and rewarding exploration paths.
Our discipline is built upon Four Essential Pillars:
- Narrative Design: This is distinct from writing. It is the art of using gameplay mechanics, environmental cues, and mission flow to tell a story without relying solely on dialogue.
- Level Design: Shaping the physical space. You will learn how to guide the player’s eye, manage pacing through terrain, and create spaces that support both stealth and high-octane combat.
- Visual Scripting: The “brain” of the quest. You will use technical tools to trigger events, manage quest states, and ensure that the world reacts dynamically to the player’s actions.
- Encounter Design: Crafting the challenge. This involves placing enemies, designing AI behaviors for specific scenes, and balancing difficulty to keep the player in a state of “flow.”
What You Will Do: Impact and Integration
As a Quest Designer Intern, you are a full member of the team. You will be immersed in the day-to-day operations of a live production environment, gaining insights that only a studio of this scale can provide.
1. Supporting Live Content
You will assist the team in supporting the live Hunter’s Gathering game. This involves deep familiarization with all shipped content to ensure consistency and quality. You will learn how to analyze player behavior in a live environment and apply those learnings to future content.
2. Design Documentation & QA Sync
In AAA development, communication is as important as creativity. You will be responsible for keeping design documentation up to date. This ensures that the QA (Quality Assurance) and Design teams are perfectly aligned on mission objectives, technical triggers, and intended player paths for both current and future milestones.
3. Building New Quest Activities
You won’t just be documenting; you’ll be creating. Under the guidance of senior designers, you will work on building new and exciting quest activities. You will take an idea from a rough paper design to a functional, scripted prototype within our proprietary engine.
4. Cross-Departmental Collaboration
Quest Designers are the central hub of development. You will participate in meetings with the Narrative, Art, Combat, and Animation departments. This exposure will give you a 360-degree view of how a major game studio functions as a single, cohesive unit.
