The Studio: Engineering the Horizon

At Guerrilla, we are famous for technical excellence. Whether it is the breathtaking visual fidelity of our proprietary Decima engine or the complex systems governing our machine ecosystems, we push hardware to its absolute limit. However, the modern gaming landscape requires more than just local performance; it requires a robust, “always-on” online infrastructure that can handle millions of concurrent players with zero downtime.

Our Online Services team is the backbone of this effort. We build the systems that connect players to our worlds and to each other. As an intern, you won’t just be writing scripts; you will be helping build the future of PlayStation’s connected experiences.

Our Online Service Team & Technology

The Online Services team at Guerrilla is a multidisciplinary group of engineers focused on reliability, maintainability, and extreme performance. We don’t just “make things work”—we make them scale.

The Mission

We deliver the networking and replication layers for both game clients and servers. This includes:

  • Integration: Seamlessly connecting with platform services like the PlayStation Network (PSN).
  • Core Systems: Managing authentication, matchmaking, player inventory, and digital storefronts.
  • Architecture: Designing domain-driven systems that share minimal state to ensure maximum stability.
The Modern Tech Stack

During your internship, you will be working with a cutting-edge, industry-standard stack:

  • Languages: Primarily Java 21 (with upcoming migrations to Java 25) and Kotlin. You may also touch Golang for DevOps tooling.
  • Frameworks: Spring Boot 3.5.x / 4.x, Hibernate, and OpenAPI.
  • Data & Persistence: PostgreSQL for relational data, Redis for high-speed caching/pub-sub, and Amazon DynamoDB.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: A full AWS ecosystem backed by Kubernetes (Amazon EKS), using Amazon SQS for queuing and S3 for storage.
  • CI/CD: Automation via GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, and Docker.

This internship is designed to move you from academic theory to production-level reality. You will receive dedicated mentorship from senior engineers and work on projects that have a direct impact on our live services.

1. Tooling and Automation

You will assist in building internal dynamic configuration management tools. These tools allow our live services to adapt in real-time without requiring a full redeploy, which is critical for maintaining a “zero downtime” environment.

2. Full-Stack Exposure

While the focus is on the backend, you will have the opportunity to broaden your horizons by working across frontend interfaces and cloud infrastructure. You’ll see how a change in the database propagates through the service layer and eventually impacts the player’s experience.

3. Resilience and Monitoring

In a AAA environment, “it works” isn’t enough. You will learn to implement instrumentation for monitoring and logging. You’ll help track the health and availability of our services, ensuring that we catch potential issues before they ever affect a player.

4. Collaborative Development

You will participate in the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). This includes requirement gathering with internal stakeholders, technical design discussions, and—most importantly—rigorous code reviews. You will learn how to write code that isn’t just functional, but clean, documented, and maintainable by a large team.

5. Infrastructure Mastery

By collaborating with the Online Infrastructure team, you will get a “look under the hood” at Kubernetes and scalability best practices. You’ll understand how to containerize applications and manage them at scale in the cloud.

Who You Are: Qualifications and Mentality

We aren’t looking for a finished expert; we are looking for a high-potential engineer with a rock-solid foundation.

Required Background

  • Education: You are currently enrolled in a Dutch school, pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Core Knowledge: You have a foundational understanding of Java. You should be comfortable with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles.
  • Web Basics: You understand how the internet works—specifically HTTP protocols and RESTful API design.

Technical Curiosity

  • Version Control: You are comfortable with Git and understand branching/merging workflows.
  • Cloud & Containers: You have a natural curiosity (or basic experience) with Docker, Kubernetes, or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Systems Thinking: You are interested in how distributed systems handle state and concurrency.

Mindset and Soft Skills

  • Problem Solver: You don’t get discouraged when a build fails; you get curious. You aren’t afraid to ask “why” and “how.”
  • Communicator: You can explain your logic and enjoy working in a collaborative, ego-free environment.
  • Gamer at Heart: You have a passion for gaming and a genuine interest in the “magic” that happens behind the scenes of an online match.

Logistics and Requirements

To ensure a successful internship, please confirm you meet the following:

  • Location: Our studio is in the heart of Amsterdam. You must be able to work on-site and live within a commutable distance.
  • Availability: You must be available for a full-time internship starting September 1st, 2026.
  • Enrollment: You must be currently enrolled in a Dutch educational institution to qualify for the internship stipend and legal requirements.
  • Background Check: Sony Interactive Entertainment conducts standard background checks at the offer stage.

Guerrilla is more than just a place to work; it is a place to innovate. We believe that a diverse team leads to better games. We offer:

  • True Mentorship: You aren’t just an extra pair of hands; you are a student of the craft.
  • Inclusive Culture: Work in an environment that embraces different backgrounds and unique perspectives.
  • Vibrant City Life: Enjoy everything Amsterdam has to offer, from its historic canals to its world-class tech scene.
  • Professional Network: Build a network with some of the most talented engineers in the global gaming industry.
