As a Character and Prop Design Artist, your role is the foundation upon which the animation team builds their performances. You are the architect of the film’s physical world. Your work begins where the initial “blue-sky” concepts end. You take sketches and visual guidelines and transform them into finalized, production-ready assets. This requires a unique blend of creative interpretation and technical discipline. You aren’t just drawing; you are building the “blueprint” for a character’s soul and the functional “logic” of the accessories they carry.

1. Design Finalization and Refinement

You will take the raw creative energy provided by the art team and channel it into polished, consistent designs. This includes:

  • Refinement of character designs to ensure they are “on-model” across the entire production.
  • Creating detailed designs for personal items and accessories that help tell a character’s story.
  • Applying art direction guidelines meticulously to maintain visual harmony between characters and their environments.

2. Production-Ready Asset Development

A design is only as good as its usability in the pipeline. You will be responsible for:

  • Turnarounds: Developing characters and props from multiple angles (front, 3/4, side, back) to provide a 3D sense of space for the animators.
  • Rigging Support: Producing all necessary elements for character rigs, including complex expression sheets, lip-sync mouth charts, hand-pose libraries, and posing references.
  • Variations and States: Creating “altered states” for props (e.g., a broken version of a character’s favorite watch) to support narrative beats.

3. Technical Integration and Rigor

Working within a feature film pipeline requires extreme attention to detail. You must:

  • Adhere to strict technical parameters established by the studio’s technical management, including naming conventions, file structures, and layer organization within Toon Boom Harmony.
  • Adapt and pivot your designs based on feedback from the Art Director or your immediate supervisor.
  • Ensure that all files are optimized for the rigging and animation departments to prevent technical bottlenecks.

4. Cross-Departmental Collaboration

Animation is a team sport. Your role requires you to:

  • Communicate effectively with Layout, Rigging, and Animation departments to ensure your designs meet their specific functional needs.
  • Participate in creative discussions aimed at improving the overall visual quality of the film and optimizing the studio’s working methods.
  • Promptly report any technical obstacles or “design-logic” issues that could affect the delivery of finalized assets.

Candidate Qualifications & Required Skills

We are looking for an artist who combines exceptional draftsmanship with a professional, pipeline-oriented mindset.

Artistic Skills

  • Exceptional Drawing Ability: A mastery of line, weight, and silhouette. You should be able to convey texture and volume through 2D lines.
  • Conceptual Interpretation: The ability to take a rough sketch or a written description and flesh it out into a fully realized, three-dimensional design.
  • Color and Texture: A strong understanding of how character designs interact with lighting and color palettes established by the Art Direction.

Technical Proficiencies

  • Toon Boom Harmony: Since our pipeline is centered on Harmony, proficiency in this software is non-negotiable. You should understand how to draw and organize assets within the software to facilitate rigging.
  • Pipeline Knowledge: A solid understanding of the 2D animation production pipeline and the technical constraints associated with feature-length productions.
  • Organization: The ability to manage your work independently, respecting priorities and deadlines set by production management.

Professional Soft Skills

  • Constructive Feedback: The ability to receive artistic critiques with a professional attitude and apply changes quickly and accurately.
  • Resilience: The capacity to work effectively under pressure and meet the rigorous deadlines common in feature film production.
  • Team Spirit: A desire to contribute to the success of the group and maintain the positive, “campfire” atmosphere of the studio.

Quebec City is a world-class destination for artists, and Happy Camper Media is one of its brightest stars. We offer more than just a paycheck; we offer the chance to be part of a local success story.

The Happy Camper Experience:

  • Meaningful Work: You will be contributing to a feature film—a project that will be seen by audiences around the world and will live on in your portfolio for years to come.
  • Mentorship: Work alongside industry veterans who are eager to share their knowledge and help you refine your craft.
  • Community: Our studio is designed to be a “safe-to-create” space. We value transparency, kindness, and hard work.

How to Apply

If you have the skills to bring our characters to life and the discipline to thrive in a feature film pipeline, we want to see your work!
Your Application Package Must Include:

1. Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detail your professional experience in animation, specifically highlighting any previous design roles.
2. Portfolio / Demo Reel: Provide a link to your online portfolio. We are looking for concrete examples of character turnarounds, prop sheets, expression sheets, and any work specifically created in Toon Boom Harmony.
3. Cover Letter: Briefly tell us why you want to work in Quebec City and what draws you to the world of 2D feature animation.
