Detailed Role Responsibilities as Senior Compositing / Lighting Artist
As a Senior Lighting Artist / Compositing Artist, you are the final eye on the pipeline. You are responsible for taking raw assets and FX and weaving them into a cohesive, cinematic masterpiece.
1. Lighting Design & Implementation
You will design and implement lighting for both characters and environments. This involves more than just illuminating a scene; it requires an understanding of narrative weight. You will work to enhance the established art direction, ensuring that the light guides the player’s eye and evokes the intended emotional response.
2. Visual Quality Control & Consistency
Maintaining the “look” of a sequence is paramount. You will be responsible for color balance and shot-to-shot continuity. Your goal is to ensure that every frame within a sequence feels part of a unified world, maintaining high quality-control standards for all finished work.
3. Multi-Departmental Collaboration
A Senior Artist at Blizzard does not work in a vacuum. You will:
- Integrate FX: Work closely with the FX department to ensure magical spells, explosions, and environmental effects sit perfectly within the lighting environment.
- Strategic Alignment: Collaborate with VFX Supervisors, Art Directors, and Producers to ensure the creative vision is being met on time and within the designated quota targets.
- Lead Communication: Liaise with Lighting/Compositing Supervisors to refine setups that can be used across multiple shots.
4. Technical Problem Solving
In our fast-paced environment, priorities can shift rapidly. You must be able to independently troubleshoot complex multi-shot setups and adapt to proprietary lighting tools or pipeline changes on the fly.
Candidate Requirements: Expertise & Skills as Senior Compositing / Lighting Artist
Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a veteran of the industry—someone who has mastered the technical tools and possesses a refined artistic “gut feeling” for what makes a shot work.
Experience Foundations
- Professional Tenure: A minimum of 8 years of experience in a high-end production environment (Games, Feature Film, TV, or high-end Commercials).
- Collaborative History: Proven experience working directly with Directors and Supervisors to define the visual language of a project.
- Visual Proof: A demo reel is mandatory. We are looking for a showcase of light, composition, and mood that demonstrates a deep understanding of cinematic storytelling.
Technical Mastery
- Software Proficiency: You must be well-versed in the industry-standard “Big Four” for this role: Katana, Nuke, Maya, and Linux.
- Rendering Engines: Expert knowledge of Renderman-RIS and Redshift is essential.
- Engine Knowledge: A decent understanding of modern game engines (Unreal, Unity, or proprietary engines) is required, as we increasingly blend pre-rendered and real-time workflows.
- Advanced Compositing: Skills must include 2D tracking, rotoscoping, element projection, layering, and extensive 3D compositing within Nuke.
Artistic Intuition
- Cinematic Eye: You have a strong grasp of color grading and shot continuity. You can look at a sequence and immediately identify why a shot feels “off” and how to fix it.
- Iteration Resilience: You are comfortable and efficient in an iteration-intensive pipeline where feedback is frequent and standards are elite.
Blizzard Entertainment offers a competitive rewards package designed to promote physical, emotional, and financial well-being. While this is a temporary role, Blizzard provides a suite of benefits for “Every World.”
- Pay Structure: The standard base pay range is $44.67 – $82.60 per hour. The final offer is negotiable and based on your specific location, experience, and performance during the interview process.
- Incentive Opportunities: In addition to base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation (though not guaranteed).
- Health & Wellness: Eligible employees have access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as mental health and wellbeing programs.
- Financial Security: Options include 401(k) with company match, life insurance, and disability insurance.
- Perks: Enjoy free and discounted games, fitness programs, and various voluntary benefits.
- Relocation: If the company requires a geographic move, relocation assistance may be available.
Application Materials Required
To be considered for this elite team, please provide the following:
- Resume: Detailing your 8+ years of experience and shipped titles/projects.
- Portfolio/Reel Link: A link to your demo reel.
- Shot Breakdown: A detailed description of your specific contributions to each shot in your reel.
