Outpost VFX is seeking a highly experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking 2D Supervisor to lead our 2D Department across our Bournemouth and London locations.
In this role, you will manage all aspects of our 2D, pre-production, and post-production pipelines, guiding complex shots seamlessly from initial concept through to final delivery. As a natural leader and technical expert, you will manage a talented team of VFX artists, balance their workloads, and maintain an organized, highly efficient production schedule.
The ideal candidate possesses a deep, nuanced understanding of compositing workflows, a proven track record of creative problem-solving under tight deadlines, and a passion for mentoring the next generation of VFX talent. You will act as the bridge between creative vision and technical execution, working closely with clients, VFX Supervisors, and other internal department heads to ensure all shots are managed efficiently, adhere to the highest quality standards, and are completed on time.
Key Responsibilities as 2D Supervisor
Creative & Technical Leadership
- Lead, inspire, and mentor the 2D team, fostering an environment of continuous learning, artistic excellence, and mutual respect.
- Oversee the technical and aesthetic quality of all 2D deliverables, ensuring they align perfectly with the client’s vision and the internal VFX Supervisor’s direction.
- Critique artists’ work constructively, providing clear, actionable feedback during dailies and reviews to push the quality of the work forward.
- Deconstruct complex visual effects shots into actionable tasks, defining the overall compositing strategy and methodology for the team.
- Step in to tackle highly complex, look-development, or troubleshooting tasks when required, setting a high standard for the team to emulate.
Pipeline & Workflow Optimization
- Manage, maintain, and continually optimize all aspects of the 2D, pre-production, and post-production pipelines.
- Collaborate closely with the Pipeline, R&D, and Editorial teams to develop, test, and implement new tools, templates, and scripts that enhance efficiency.
- Enforce and promote industry best practices, standardized templates, and organized script hygiene within Nuke and across the wider 2D department.
- Utilize Python scripting to automate repetitive tasks, streamline internal processes, and eliminate production bottlenecks.
Project & Team Management
- Partner with VFX Producers and Coordinators to accurately assess and assign artist workloads, ensuring realistic scheduling and resource allocation.
- Proactively identify potential project bottlenecks, technical hurdles, or resource constraints, implementing swift and creative solutions before they affect deliveries.
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and career development check-ins with members of the 2D team.
- Participate actively in the recruitment process, reviewing showreels, conducting interviews, and helping to identify and onboard top-tier 2D talent.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Liaise closely with CG, FX, Animation, Asset, and Matte Painting department heads to ensure seamless data flow and integration between 3D and 2D elements.
- Advise 3D departments on optimal pass breakouts and technical requirements needed to achieve the desired look efficiently in compositing.
- Maintain a strong, communicative relationship with production management to ensure transparency regarding shot progress, flag risks, and align on deadlines.
Key Skills & Qualifications for 2D Supervisor

Essential Requirements
- Extensive VFX Experience: A strong, demonstrable background in high-end film and episodic visual effects, with previous experience working in a senior, lead, or supervisory 2D capacity.
- Compositing Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of advanced compositing workflows, deep compositing, color space management (ACES), keying, rotoscoping, tracking, and projection techniques.
- Organization & Problem Solving: Exceptional organizational skills with a proven ability to manage high volumes of shots, multi-task effectively, and stay calm under production pressure.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and build strong relationships across departments.
Technical Toolkit
- Houdini: Strong familiarity with Houdini workflows, particularly regarding how data, particles, and volume elements transition smoothly into the 2D pipeline.
- Photoshop: Advanced proficiency in Photoshop for digital matte painting integration, texturing, look-dev, and quick concept modifications.
- Python Scripting: Practical, hands-on experience utilizing Python scripting to write custom tools, gizmos, and pipeline integrations that optimize the 2D workflow.
- Shotgrid: High proficiency in Shotgrid (formerly Shotgun) for task tracking, artist allocation, review notes, and overall production management.
