Detailed Job Description

As a Senior Game Artist at Rendered Ideas, you are the bridge between the design team’s abstract concepts and the final polished experience the player sees. Your role is both “hands-on” and “eyes-on.”

1. End-to-End Artistic Execution

You will create art across a massive stylistic range—from hyper-realistic textures to stylized, “cartoon” character designs. You lead the process from the very first concept sketch through to the final implementation within our game engine. You aren’t just drawing; you are building an atmosphere.

2. World-Building & Environments

A significant portion of your role involves creating character concepts, immersive backgrounds, and environments that feel lived-in. You will produce high-quality texture content for the game world, including diffuse, normal, and specialized maps that ensure our 2D/2.5D worlds have depth and personality.

3. UI/UX and Aesthetic Flow

A game is only as good as its usability. You will design and create the game interface (UI) and menus, ensuring that the aesthetic of the game flows seamlessly into the user experience. You understand that a button isn’t just a button; it’s part of the game’s visual identity.

4. Engine Decoration & Technical Integration

We expect our Senior Game Artist to be comfortable inside the engine. You will decorate and optimize art assets within our in-house game engine, ensuring that your art looks exactly as intended while respecting the target platform’s hardware constraints.

5. Leadership & Mentorship

This is a senior role. You will be expected to guide and mentor junior artists, providing constructive feedback and helping them navigate the complexities of game art production. You will contribute to the evolution of the art pipeline, finding ways to make the whole team faster and more effective.

Eligibility & Technical Requirements

We are looking for a veteran who has seen projects through from pre-production to the “Live Ops” phase.

Technical Mastery

  • Software Expertise: Mastery of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is non-negotiable. You should know these tools inside and out, from digital painting techniques to vector-based UI design.
  • The Fundamentals: A solid background in academic drawing, sketching, and illustration. You understand anatomy, perspective, and color theory at a deep level.
  • Traditional & Digital Fusion: A thorough understanding of both digital and traditional graphic art techniques. You can translate the soul of a hand-drawn sketch into a digital masterpiece.

Professional Experience

  • Education: A BA in Art Media, Graphic Design, or equivalent relevant experience. Your portfolio is your primary resume.
  • Industry Tenure: 3+ years of experience as a video game artist. You understand the specific constraints of gaming—draw calls, texture sizes, and performance optimization—in ways that film or advertising artists might not.

Soft Skills & Leadership Mindset

  • Self-Motivation & Communication: You are a proactive communicator. You don’t wait for instructions; you see a visual need and you fill it. You can articulate your artistic decisions clearly to designers and developers alike.
  • Resilience & Adaptability: Game development is an iterative process. You have a positive attitude toward change and the ability to pivot your artistic direction based on player feedback or technical requirements.
  • Objectivity: You have the maturity to provide and receive objective feedback. You leave your ego at the door and focus on what makes the game better.

The Mentorship Philosophy at Rendered Ideas

At Rendered Ideas, we believe that “Senior” is a title of service. As a Senior Game Artist, you aren’t just here to be the best artist in the room; you’re here to make everyone else better.

You will lead “Art Dailies,” where you help junior artists break through creative blocks. You will help define our internal style guides, ensuring that even as we scale, our games maintain a consistent, high-quality look. We provide you with the time and resources needed to be an effective mentor, recognizing that teaching others is a vital part of your professional growth.

Why Senior Artists Choose Rendered Ideas

The biggest complaint from senior artists in the industry is the lack of “creative air.” Too often, seniority just means more meetings and less art. We flip that script.

  • Focus on Craft: While you do have leadership responsibilities, you are still a primary creator. We make sure you spend the majority of your time doing what you love: making art.
  • Direct Influence: You aren’t just an “order taker.” You sit with the design team from Day 1, influencing the very mechanics and themes of the games we build.
  • Stability & Upside: We offer the financial security of a high-paying role with the “lottery ticket” upside of a profit-sharing model. When you help build a hit, your life changes.

The Application Process

We want to see your journey as an artist.

1. Portfolio Deep-Dive: Show us your range. We want to see character sheets, environment spreads, UI designs, and—crucially—process shots that show how you think.
2. Leadership Interview: A conversation about your experience mentoring others. We want to hear your philosophy on providing feedback and managing an art pipeline.
3. Technical Workflow Chat: We’ll talk about how you optimize assets for mobile vs. PC and your experience working within game engines.
4. Team Collaborative Session: A final meeting with our core designers and developers to see how your vision aligns with the future of Rendered Ideas.
