Remote Jobs Position Overview
Beffio studio is seeking a highly creative, technically proficient, and forward-thinking Senior Animator 3D to join our growing 3D Art Department. In this permanent, fully remote position, you will take on a vital role in crafting expressive, stylized, and gameplay-driven animations for our roster of high-profile AA and AAA game projects developed within the Unity3D engine. Remote jobs.
This is a senior, hands-on production role designed for a veteran animator who looks at game development holistically. You understand that great game animation is not just about moving characters in a digital content creation (DCC) tool—it is about how those characters feel under a player’s thumb, how they respond to instantaneous engine logic, and how efficiently they run on the target hardware.
If you are an animator who loves traditional keyframe craftsmanship but is equally excited by building specialized rigging workflows, exploring procedural animation solutions, and solving complex production challenges alongside a collaborative, decentralized team within the European Union, this role offers the perfect platform for your career.
Comprehensive Role Responsibilities
As a Senior Animator 3D, your day-to-day duties will blend high-level artistic creation, structural pipeline development, engine integration, and bleeding-edge workflow exploration. Remote jobs.
1. Stylized Character Animation & Mechanics
- Expressive Asset Creation: Design and execute world-class, keyframe-based 3D animations for a diverse cast of characters, creatures, and environmental elements, infusing them with distinct personalities, snappy timing, and clear acting.
- Gameplay Responsiveness: Prioritize gameplay readability, silhouette clarity, and exaggerated motion arcs to ensure all animations provide immediate, satisfying visual feedback to player inputs, combat triggers, and locomotion shifts.
- Artistic Flexibility: Maintain strict adherence to established stylized art directions, adapting your work to reflect unique motion languages, including snappy anime-inflected styles or deliberate, stepped/reduced frame-rate aesthetics.
2. Rig Validation & Animation Workflow Development
- Rigging Collaboration: Partner closely with our internal technical artists and character riggers to co-develop, audit, and refine custom, build-made rigs optimized specifically for stylized anatomical distortions.
- Deformation Auditing: Act as the ultimate quality gate for character models from an animator’s perspective; systematically validate skeletal structures, skin-weighting formulas, and facial rig controls to guarantee clean deformations and intuitive usability.
- Pipeline Standard-Setting: Contribute directly to the creation and optimization of studio-wide animation standards, implementing bulletproof naming conventions, folder hierarchies, and smooth export/import pipelines.
3. Unity3D Engine Integration & Optimization
- State Machine Engineering: Move beyond the DCC tool by implementing your assets directly into the Unity3D editor. Build, structure, and maintain clean Animator Controllers, complex multi-layered blend trees, and robust animation state machines.
- In-Engine Iteration: Play-test and fine-tune animation states directly in-engine, tweaking transition durations, blending curves, and interrupted-state logic to align exactly with design metrics and runtime gameplay logic.
- Feature Support: Collaboratively support animation-driven gameplay features, such as root motion coordination, hit-stop windows, dynamic inverse kinematics (IK) foot placement, and interactive environmental interactions.
4. Procedural & Automated Animation Exploration
- Next-Gen R&D: Participate actively in studio research and experimentation surrounding procedural, semi-automated, or physics-assisted animation pipelines designed to scale for massive project workloads.
- Advanced Tool Utilization: Explore and proto-type content pipelines utilizing SideFX Houdini or custom script plugins to automate secondary motions (cloth, hair, tails) and optimize DCC-to-engine data transfers.
- Scalability Implementation: Brainstorm and advocate for innovative technical solutions that reduce repetitive manual tasks, allowing the art team to focus on high-impact, handcrafted hero animations. Remote jobs.
5. Performance Awareness & Cross-Discipline Collaboration
- Runtime Optimization: Adapt, compress, and prune animation curve data to respect strict runtime performance budgets, memory ceilings, and frame-rate limits across target platforms, including mobile and hybrid systems.
- Agile Cross-Team Synergy: Work in tight alignment with gameplay designers, system programmers, technical artists, and character modelers. Iterate rapidly based on technical profiling data, creative feedback loops, and production timelines.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
Professional Experience & Portfolio
- Industry Longevity: A minimum of 5+ years of verified professional experience operating as a dedicated 3D character animator within the video game industry.
- Stylized Pedigree: A proven track record of contributing to shipped or majorly produced stylized AA or AAA game projects.
- Elite Showreel: A highly polished, up-to-date animation reel focusing heavily on gameplay-ready character animations. Your reel must cleanly highlight your mastery of core body mechanics, physical weight, weight distribution, performance acting, and structural readability in a real-time 3D context.
Software & Technical Art Competencies
- DCC Excellence: Advanced, professional-level fluency in Autodesk Maya and/or Blender as your primary 3D animation environments.
- Technical Rigging Literacy: A strong, practical understanding of modern game-ready skeletal hierarchies, skinning limits, blend shapes, control rigs, and real-time animation constraints.
Engine & Pipeline Mastery
- Autonomous Unity Skills: Demonstrated experience implementing, configuring, and debugging animation assets inside the Unity3D ecosystem (Mecanim, state machines, layers).
- Systemic Thinking: A solid grasp of how character motion interacts with player controller scripts, physics engines, hitboxes, and dynamic environment obstacles.
Soft Skills & Location Parameters
- Geographic Proximity: Must be located within the European Union (or holding valid, independent EU work authorization) and comfortable aligning with our core team collaboration window of 10:00 to 15:00 CET.
- Communication Mastery: Fluent, clear, and highly articulate written and spoken English skills.
- Growth Mindset: A proactive problem-solver who approaches pipeline constraints with curiosity, embraces R&D experimentation, and communicates technical intent transparently within an agile, async-friendly workspace.
Bonus Skills & Desirable Attributes
While not strictly required, candidates who bring any of the following technical skill sets will stand out significantly during our review process:
- Direct, hands-on experience developing or implementing procedural animation networks or toolsets inside SideFX Houdini.
- Basic to intermediate scripting knowledge (Python, Mel, C#) to help automate export menus or build custom animation utility scripts.
- Practical experience tailoring asset compression, skeletal reduction, or LOD pipelines specifically for mobile games or memory-constrained platforms.
- Familiarity with building custom Unity-driven animation behaviors, playable graph APIs, or custom timeline scripts.
- Long-standing experience working within distributed, multiregional, fully remote production groups.
