In this role, you will ensure that all delivered shots maintain ILM’s rigorous technical standards while actively assisting the Director in realizing their creative goals. You will achieve this by directing the artists’ daily work, optimizing technical workflows, maintaining studio organization, and fostering clear communication across departments.

As a leader, you are crewed to a major show (or multiple smaller projects) and own the technical development, implementation requirements, and overall pipeline health for that production.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Show Architecture & Global Planning

  • Technical Ownership: Serve as the ultimate authority for all technical development and implementation requirements on your assigned show(s), including core workflow, tool integration, and pipeline decisions.
  • Global Collaboration: Own the comprehensive technical approach plan for the show, partnering closely with key supervisors across all ILM global locations to align on planning, resource allocation, and delivery milestones.
  • Cross-Site Compatibility: Ensure that all technical implementations function seamlessly across all ILM studios globally, proactively accounting for variances in software licensing, machine specifications, and file-sharing infrastructure.

2. Resource Forecasting & Infrastructure Management

  • Data & Compute Projections: Responsible for show-specific forecasting of software licenses, machine availability, render farm capacity, and storage requirements throughout the entirety of the production schedule.
  • Studio Reporting: Partner with studio representatives across ILM’s global network to provide data-driven project projections for studio-wide assessments and executive reports.

3. Innovation & Pipeline Alignment

  • Workflow Leadership: Directly oversee the deployment of facility-approved, show-specific workflows and technological innovations. Act as or delegate the “Product Owner” role for new show technologies, remaining accountable for their successful integration.
  • Canonical Compliance: Ensure all custom show decisions remain aligned with canonical facility pipeline goals. Maintain full visibility of these efforts with the R&D, Production Engineering (P.E.), IT, and CG Technology Supervisor teams.
  • Divergence Management: Flag and communicate any technical decisions that create necessary divergences from canonical asset management tools, such as modifications to core naming conventions, shotfile structures, or core software choices.

4. Communication & Vendor Collaboration

  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Proactively communicate technical priorities, software requirements, and architectural concerns to the VFX Producer, VFX Supervisor, and the broader CG Technology Leadership team.
  • External Partnerships: Collaborate dynamically with outsource vendors and ILM production partners to standardize data-sharing protocols, file formats, and color space requirements.

  • OS & Scripting: Strong working knowledge of Linux. Hands-on experience with Python and shell scripting is considered a distinct professional advantage.

Preferred Skills & Technical Competencies

  • Strong background in Look Development and/or shader writing.
  • Working knowledge of Layout and Matchmove disciplines.
  • Direct production familiarity with Maya, Katana, RenderMan, and Nuke.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, or equivalent professional experience.
  • VFX Experience: A minimum of 5+ years of hands-on, high-end feature film production experience.
  • Leadership Experience: Significant post-production experience, specifically including a proven track record working in a supervisory or leadership capacity (such as CG Supervisor or Sequence Supervisor).
