The Studio: Creating the Impossible
At Guerrilla Games, we are known for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in real-time rendering and narrative depth. From the lush, machine-stalked wilds of the Horizon series to the gritty corridors of Killzone, our studio thrives on innovation. Our Cinematics Team is at the epicenter of this mission. We don’t just make “cutscenes”; we build immersive, emotionally resonant experiences that blur the line between cinema and gameplay.
As an Animation intern, you won’t just be a spectator. You will be integrated into a multidisciplinary environment where artists, engineers, and writers collaborate to craft the future of interactive entertainment.
What You Will Do: A Journey of Development
This internship is meticulously structured to prioritize your growth and learning. You are not here to fetch coffee; you are here to learn how to weave digital magic. Your journey will include:
1. Observational Learning and Mentorship
You will be paired with seasoned animators and cinematic artists. By shadowing these industry leaders, you will witness the nuances of professional workflows—from how a shot is initially blocked out to the final polish that makes a character’s emotion feel hauntingly real.
2. Multidisciplinary Exposure
The Cinematics Team is a broad church. You will gain hands-on insight into several key sub-disciplines:
- Layout and Previsualization: Learning how to stage a scene and manage virtual camera work.
- Body and Facial Animation: Understanding the “soul” of the performance through keyframing and motion capture refinement.
- Sequence Integration: Discovering how all these pieces are stitched together within the game engine to trigger seamlessly during play.
3. Real-World Pipeline Experience
You will follow the lifecycle of a cinematic sequence from its inception in the Narrative department through to its final implementation. This provides a holistic view of “The Big Picture,” helping you understand why certain creative choices are made based on technical constraints or storytelling needs.
4. Professional Feedback Loops
Participate in “dailies” and review sessions. You will learn the art of giving and receiving constructive criticism—a vital skill in any AAA studio. You’ll see how high-level quality standards are maintained and how the team iterates toward perfection.
5. Guided Projects and Skill Development
Under the guidance of your mentor, you will work on specific learning assignments or personal projects designed to bolster your portfolio. These tasks will be tailored to bridge the gap between your current skill set and the requirements of a Junior Cinematic Animator.
Who You Are: Qualifications and Mindset
Guerrilla Games is looking for a “Diamond in the Rough”—someone with a strong foundational skill set and an insatiable hunger to learn.
Academic and Professional Background
- Student Status: You are currently enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a degree program in Animation, Game Development, Fine Arts, or a related field.
- Portfolio: You can provide a demo reel or portfolio that demonstrates a strong grasp of the 12 Principles of Animation. We are looking for an eye for weight, timing, posing, and performance.
Technical Skills
- Maya Mastery: You have extensive experience with Autodesk Maya. It should feel like an extension of your own hands.
- Engine Familiarity: You have at least a basic understanding of game engines (such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or Godot). You should understand how a “Sequencer” or “Timeline” works.
- Technical Curiosity: You aren’t afraid of the “black box.” You want to know how the rig works, how the engine processes data, and how to optimize your work for real-time performance.
Soft Skills and Traits
- Collaborative Spirit: You enjoy working in a team. You communicate clearly and can articulate your creative choices.
- Resilience: You view feedback as a tool for growth, not a personal critique.
- Proactivity: You don’t wait to be told what to do; you seek out resources, ask questions, and spend your spare time refining your craft.
While not strictly required, we are particularly interested in candidates who possess:
- Mocap Experience: Exposure to Motion Capture (MoCap) cleanup or editing.
- Cinematic Flair: An interest in cinematography, including lens choice, lighting, and composition.
- Technical Animation: A basic understanding of rigging or Python scripting for Maya.
- Passion for Games: A deep-seated love for the medium and an understanding of how narrative-driven games differ from film.
Located in the cultural heart of Amsterdam, our studio offers a vibrant, international atmosphere. We believe that diversity of thought leads to better games.
“At Guerrilla, we believe that our team’s varied backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives help us create games that resonate with a diverse audience.”
