Best known for creating some of the industry’s most critically acclaimed universes—including Warcraft®, Overwatch®, Diablo®, and StarCraft®—our immersive titles captivate millions of players across platforms, national borders, socio-economic backgrounds, and generations.

As a premier developer and publisher of digital entertainment experiences, and a division of Activision Blizzard under the Microsoft umbrella, Blizzard continues to push the boundary of what interactive entertainment can achieve. We believe that hard work, constant iteration, and meticulous polish constitute our “secret recipe.”

However, the most vital components of that recipe are the diverse, exceptionally talented people who share our creative vision. We aspire to build a culture where everyone can thrive, unleashing the personal aspirations of our workforce while connecting the global community through epic entertainment. We cultivate a work environment that fiercely protects the core artistry of game development, balancing technical perfection with authentic creative expression.

The Role & Unannounced Project Overview

Blizzard Entertainment’s engineering division is looking for a visionary Principal Software Engineer specializing in graphics and rendering architectures to champion the visual development of a brand-new, unannounced game project. This dedicated development pod operates in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment that deeply values creativity, engineering excellence, and an uncompromising dedication to high-tier product quality.

As a Principal Graphics Engineer of this incubation and development group, you will assume absolute technical ownership over the rendering architecture and visual pipelines that power our game client. You will be responsible for defining how high-quality, photorealistic or highly stylized visuals scale smoothly across a multi-platform landscape.

Operating at this level means navigating fluid production priorities and a dynamic environment with poise, maintaining a rock-solid, long-term technical vision. You will act as the master bridge between core engineering systems and creative content production, transforming aesthetic concepts into high-performance, real-time interactive frames.

Key Responsibilities as Principal Graphics Engineer

1. Rendering Architecture & Shader Systems

  • Pipeline Engineering: Design, author, and implement highly scalable rendering systems, customized shader frameworks, and core graphics pipelines inside Unity to support top-tier visual delivery across PC, console, and mobile formats.
  • Custom SRP Customization: Customize and extend Unity’s Universal Render Pipeline (URP) and Scriptable Render Pipelines (SRP) to implement cutting-edge visual techniques specialized for our project’s requirements.
  • Advanced Shader Authoring: Develop, profile, and optimize complex runtime shaders utilizing HLSL and ShaderLab, leveraging advanced GPU execution methodologies, hardware-driven computation, and custom compute shaders.

2. Technical Art Partnerships & Workflow Automation

  • Workflow Optimization: Partner intimately with internal Art Directors, Technical Artists, and Content Creators to map out, develop, and deploy scalable art workflows and production pipelines.
  • Tooling Infrastructure: Build automated asset processing tools and shared rendering libraries that eliminate workflow blockages and accelerate content iteration speeds for the asset creation team.

3. Performance Profiling, Memory Management, & Optimization

  • Hardware Profiling: Systematically profile and eliminate execution bottlenecks across the CPU, GPU, system memory, and runtime asset loading routines.
  • Streaming Budgets: Define, enforce, and manage strict graphics performance budgets, multi-tier texture streaming strategies, and hardware-specific asset memory constraints.
  • Streaming Optimization: Design efficient client patching frameworks and asset delivery pipelines, including advanced asset bundling strategies that facilitate seamless, high-speed game updates.

4. Engineering Mentorship & Visionary Leadership

  • Architectural Guidance: Mentor, coach, and guide peer graphics engineers and generalist programmers, reviewing code architecture and establishing high-quality engineering benchmarks for the rendering department.
  • Technical Evangelism: Set and champion a cohesive, long-term technical vision for visual systems and graphics pipelines across the entire unannounced project team, aligning goals across separate disciplines.

Qualifications & Technical Requirements

Minimum Professional Experience

  • Industry Longevity: A minimum of 13+ years of professional software engineering experience focused heavily within the commercial video game industry or real-time simulation sector.
  • Shipped Unity Track Record: Significant, hands-on professional history working directly on real-time graphics and rendering engineering systems for successfully shipped Unity titles across multiple consumer platforms.
  • Advanced Engine Mastery: Deep, practical experience building and optimizing graphics subsystems inside Unity, with verifiable, production-level familiarity manipulating the Universal Render Pipeline (URP) or custom Scriptable Render Pipelines (SRP).
  • Expert Gpu Programming: Expert-level fluency developing and optimizing intricate shaders utilizing HLSL and ShaderLab, alongside comprehensive execution experience leveraging compute shaders and GPU-driven rendering techniques.

Core Skills & Technical Knowledge

  • Modern Rendering Mastery: Deep, authoritative knowledge of modern real-time rendering algorithms, including physically based rendering (PBR) workflows, global illumination, real-time shadowing methodologies, post-processing filters, and dynamic material systems.
  • Low-Level Profiling Savvy: High proficiency using advanced profiling utilities (e.g., RenderDoc, Pix, Unity Profiler, NSight) to optimize CPU/GPU cycles, cache line efficiency, and asset loading states during intensive real-time gameplay loops.
  • Cross-Discipline Collaboration: A proven track record of establishing highly productive, empathetic, and collaborative cross-discipline partnerships with artists, designers, and production leads.
  • Accountability & Autonomy: Demonstrated capability to take proactive initiative on systemic problems, managing complex development schedules independently while maintaining total ownership over code outcomes.
  • Player-Centric Perspective: An active, knowledgeable interest in a wide variety of video game genres. You use your personal perspective as an experienced player to make smart creative, technical, and gameplay-focused engineering decisions.

Extra Points & Desirable Assets (Bonus Skills)

  • Prior experience developing modular shared libraries, specialized internal rendering tools, or automated DCC (Digital Content Creation) asset pipeline extensions inside Unity.
  • Familiarity or implementation experience integrating audio middleware systems (such as Audiokinetic Wwise, FMOD, or Fabric) alongside rendering threads within Unity-centric titles.
  • A profound familiarity with, appreciation for, and understanding of traditional Blizzard entertainment properties and design aesthetics.
