As an FX Artist at 3Doubles, you are responsible for the “spectacle.” You aren’t just placing assets; you are simulating the laws of physics to create fire, water, smoke, destruction, and magical effects that feel grounded in reality—or spectacular beyond it. You will work closely with our internal VFX Supervisors and Leads to ensure every simulation aligns with the project’s creative direction and technical constraints.

Key Responsibilities

• Simulation Development: Design and execute high-quality effects, including but not limited to particles, rigid body dynamics (RBD), fluids (FLIP), volumes (Pyro), and cloth/hair simulations.
• Procedural Workflows: Utilize Houdini’s procedural nature to create scalable setups. For Mid and Senior roles, this includes HDA (Houdini Digital Asset) creation to assist the wider team.
• Scene Optimization: Efficiently manage heavy simulation data. You must be able to troubleshoot “heavy” scenes and optimize caches for rendering without sacrificing visual fidelity.
• Integration & Rendering: Work with lighting and compositing departments to ensure FX passes are easily integrated into the final shot.
• Deadline Management: As a freelancer, you are the master of your own schedule. You must provide accurate time estimates and consistently meet delivery milestones.

We are looking for artists who are as methodical as they are creative. The ideal candidate treats every frame as a work of art and every simulation as a puzzle to be solved.

• Software Proficiency: Expert-level command of SideFX Houdini is non-negotiable.
• Scripting (Mid/Senior): Proficiency in VEX and Python is highly desirable for creating custom tools and manipulating data at a geometry level.
• Aesthetic Eye: A strong understanding of timing, weight, and scale in physics. You should be able to reference real-world phenomena to ground your digital work.
• Communication: While the work is remote, the collaboration is constant. You must be able to communicate technical hurdles clearly and accept constructive feedback with a professional mindset.
• Self-Sufficiency: The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, especially for Senior-level artists who may be tasked with “hero” shots.
