Eleventh Hour Games (EHG) is a remote-first, rapidly expanding studio born from a collective passion for the Top-Down Action RPG (ARPG) genre. Following the global success of our breakout title, Last Epoch, we are scaling our creative team to meet the demands of an evolving world. We are looking for a Senior Environment Artist who is not just a technician, but a world-builder—someone who can take a blank canvas and transform it into a sprawling, atmospheric, and performant landscape that tells a story through every modular kit and vista.
This is a senior-level role designed for an artist who thrives on ownership. You will be responsible for the lifecycle of environment creation, from the initial blockout and geometric layout to the final polish and shader optimization. At Eleventh Hour Games, we value “next-generation creators” and provide a culture where your work directly influences the player’s journey through the world of Eterra and beyond.

At Eleventh Hour Games, our philosophy is simple: Extraordinary games build passionate communities. We don’t just build levels; we build environments that breathe. As a Senior Environment Artist, you are the architect of the player’s visual experience. You will navigate the delicate balance between the “isometric” perspective requirements of an ARPG and the grand scale of epic landmarks and vistas.
We are a studio that grew from a Reddit post into a powerhouse of the genre. We maintain that “indie heart” with a “AAA standard” of execution. Joining us means you are joining a close-knit team where communication is open, and your voice carries weight in the direction of the game’s aesthetic evolution.
1. End-to-End Environment Ownership
You will be the primary stakeholder for specific environment biomes and zones. This is a “hands-on” leadership role where you will:
- Translate 2D concept art and mood boards into fully realized 3D spaces.
- Take charge of the blockout phase, ensuring that the environment supports gameplay flow, pathfinding, and combat encounters before high-fidelity assets are integrated.
- Perform final in-engine implementation, including scene assembly, set dressing, and final “beauty passes” that define the atmosphere.
2. Asset Creation & Modular Systems
Efficiency is as important as beauty. You will:
- Design and build modular kits that allow for high-speed world building while maintaining visual variety.
- Create hero assets—unique, high-detail landmarks that act as focal points for the player and aid in navigation.
- Develop supporting prop sets that add layers of history and “lived-in” detail to the world.
3. Material & Shader Development
The look of the world is defined by how light hits its surfaces. You will:
- Develop and implement complex material systems that support visual fidelity and environmental storytelling (e.g., weathered stone, magical residue, varying biomes).
- Work with Technical Artists to ensure shaders are optimized for top-down perspectives and performant across a wide range of hardware.
4. Performance & Technical Stewardship
A beautiful game that doesn’t run well is a failure. Your role includes:
- Optimization: Managing vertex counts, draw calls, and texture memory without sacrificing the artistic vision.
- Profiling: Using engine tools to identify “heavy” zones and finding creative solutions to maintain a high frame rate.
- Best Practices: Defining how the team organizes scenes, sets up LODs (Levels of Detail), and utilizes collision volumes.
5. Collaborative Leadership & Mentorship
As a Senior Environment Artist, you are a pillar of the art team.
- Feature Ownership: Act as the “go-to” person for the environment art team, coordinating with Tech Art and Engineering to solve pipeline hurdles.
- Mentorship: Provide constructive feedback to junior and mid-level artists, helping them grow their technical skills and artistic “eye.”
- Cross-Discipline Partnership: Work with Level Designers to ensure the world is fun to play in, and with the Narrative team to ensure the environment reinforces the lore.
Eleventh Hour Games is looking for a veteran who has a deep love for the craft of environment art and the technical curiosity to keep pushing boundaries.
- The Experienced Creator: You have at least 5 years of professional experience in environment art and have seen at least one major title through to launch. You know how to handle the “home stretch” of production.
- The Engine Expert: You have a deep understanding of modern game engines (Unity experience is a major plus). You are comfortable debugging your own scenes and aren’t afraid to dive into the technical side of asset implementation.
- The Visual Storyteller: You understand that a pile of rubble isn’t just a pile of rubble—it’s a clue to what happened in that room before the player arrived. You have a strong grasp of composition, color theory, and lighting.
- The Modular Thinker: You enjoy the puzzle of creating a kit of parts that can be rearranged to create a thousand different looks.
- The Remote Pro: You are self-driven. You don’t need a manager looking over your shoulder to stay productive. You communicate clearly via Slack and Zoom and know how to manage your own time effectively in a distributed team.
While the core requirements are essential, we would be particularly excited if you bring:
- Lighting Expertise: An eye for mood and the ability to set up real-time lighting that enhances the emotional impact of a zone.
- Level Design Background: A “gameplay-first” mindset where you prioritize the player’s path and combat arenas.
- Procedural Workflows: Experience with tools like Houdini or Substance Designer to automate and enhance environment generation.
- ARPG Passion: If you have spent hundreds of hours in games like Diablo, Path of Exile, or Last Epoch, you speak our language.
Remote-First Excellence
We were built as a remote studio. This isn’t a temporary policy; it’s our DNA. We provide the tools and workflows necessary for you to do your best work from your home office, regardless of your time zone.
Inclusion & Growth
As a KRAFTON Americas company, we are committed to an inclusive workplace. We believe that diverse perspectives lead to better games. We offer:
- Professional Development: Opportunities to attend conferences, take courses, and move into leadership roles.
- Ownership: A culture where every artist is encouraged to “own” their work and contribute ideas to the broader project.
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical/dental/vision plans and a focus on work-life balance (no “crunch” culture).
Reasonable Accommodation & EEOC
KRAFTON Americas is an equal-opportunity employer. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. We are committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals and will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations to participate in the job application or interview process.
