Position Overview As a Lead FX Artist at Scanline VFX, you will report directly to the FX Supervisor and play a pivotal role in creating, guiding, and overseeing high-caliber FX work. You will be responsible for designing and executing complex simulations, solving technical and artistic challenges, and ensuring consistency, quality, and efficiency across projects. Your role will also involve mentoring junior FX artists, providing constructive feedback, and contributing to the development of innovative techniques and pipeline enhancements. This is a hands-on position that combines artistry, technical mastery, and leadership. Key Responsibilities As a Lead FX Artist at Scanline VFX, your responsibilities include: Creation of Cinematic FX: Design and produce a wide range of realistic and imaginative effects, including destruction, smoke, fire, water, fluid simulations, atmospheric phenomena, and supernatural elements. Deliver dynamic and visually compelling simulations that meet client expectations and elevate the narrative of each project. Collaboration and Integration: Work under guidance from multiple supervisors to achieve artistic quality and technical precision, exploring various approaches and looks to optimize results. Collaborate with lighting and compositing teams to ensure FX integrate seamlessly into final shots. Work with other departments to maintain consistent style, pipeline efficiency, and technical workflow. Leadership and Mentorship: Mentor junior FX artists, share knowledge, and help troubleshoot technical challenges. Encourage learning of new techniques, software, and approaches to enhance the team’s collective skill set. Revisions and Feedback: Incorporate supervisor and client feedback effectively and promptly, ensuring that all work meets quality standards and deadlines. Maintain consistency and continuity across FX shots, aligning with the artistic vision of the project. Pipeline Innovation: Suggest improvements to workflows and FX processes to increase efficiency and quality. Stay updated with industry trends, new software, and simulation techniques, ensuring Scanline VFX remains at the forefront of visual effects innovation. Qualifications & Skills We are seeking candidates who demonstrate artistic vision, technical expertise, and leadership skills: Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in visual effects, animation, or a related field. Experience: Proven experience in live-action visual effects for feature films or high-end television. Technical Skills: Expert knowledge of Houdini and/or 3ds Max. Strong experience in creating a variety of FX simulations: destruction, atmospheric, fluid, and supernatural effects. Deep understanding of physics, motion, and natural phenomena across multiple scales. Ability to learn new software quickly and adapt to evolving production pipelines. Leadership & Teamwork: Experience leading and mentoring teams, providing constructive guidance and problem-solving. Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with supervisors, artists, and cross-departmental teams. Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Open-minded, creative, and solution-oriented approach. Bonus Skills / Software Knowledge: Familiarity with Flowline, Thinking Particle, FumeFX, Krakatoa, MAXScript. Experience in compositing or scripting.
