About Avalanche Studios Group ::

At Avalanche Studios Group, our defining operational philosophy is simple: we create worlds beyond limits. For over two decades, our studios have pushed the technological boundaries of sandbox open-world development. Our legacy is defined by systemic player freedom, immense horizons, and explosive, emergent gameplay as seen in the Just Cause series, the brutal post-apocalyptic plains of Mad Max, and the visually stunning, biologically accurate wilderness of theHunter: Call of the Wild. Technical Artist job.

Our Stockholm headquarters is located in Södermalm, globally recognized as a primary hub for game development talent. The physical office environment is intentionally designed to reflect our creative portfolio—a striking architectural blend where the lush, vibrant vegetation of theHunter encounters the raw, industrial, and corroded metal aesthetics of Mad Max. To foster high-velocity collaboration, creative brainstorming, and regular team playtesting, our hybrid workflow requires all team members to be physically co-located in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Avalanche Studios Group operate on a foundational commitment to building an inclusive, diverse, and psychologically safe workplace. We firmly believe that the strength of our studio stems from differing perspectives and unique cultural backgrounds. At Avalanche, your heritage, gender, or sexual orientation have no bearing on your value or standing. What truly matters is your unique artistic perspective, your drive, your technical skill, and your collaborative spirit.

Core Responsibilities: What You’ll Do

Operating within a nimble incubation team requires a combination of self-directed technical execution, systemic pipeline planning, and open creative collaboration. Your day-to-day responsibilities will cover three main areas:

1. Prototype Development & Tactical Gameplay Feedback

  • Tactile Feedback Loops: Translate high-level gameplay concepts into real-time visual results. You will build systems that communicate weight, collision, velocity, and impact to the player through material responses, dynamic lighting tweaks, and tailored rendering behaviors.
  • Advanced Shader & Material Design: Author and maintain optimized, high-fidelity shaders inside Unreal Engine. Focus extensively on mimicking grounded, believable natural materials (e.g., dynamic mud, interactive foliage deformation, water surfaces, wetness graphs, weather-impact states).
  • Procedural Workflows & Simulation: Prototype and deploy procedural asset setups, real-time visual effects (VFX), dynamic destruction profiles, and physics-driven environmental asset behaviors that react organically to player movement.

2. Pipeline Architecture & Cross-Disciplinary Bridging

  • Workflow Optimization: Help establish, document, and clean up Technical Art workflows from scratch for a fast-moving, prototype-centric team, ensuring asset optimization scales sensibly if the project moves into production.
  • Animation & Traversal Partnership: Collaborate directly with animators and character engineers. You will support the implementation of fluid character traversal mechanics (climbing, parkour, physics-driven ragdoll blending) by ensuring character assets, clothing, and environmental collision points blend cleanly.
  • Design & Engineering Alignment: Sit at the hub of art and programming, helping game designers express their gameplay intentions through technically sound and performant engine configurations.

3. Iterative Creative Problem Solving

  • Rapid R&D Mentality: Embrace an evolving, ambiguous development environment where rapid asset iteration, continuous experimentation, and quick technical throwaways are standard tools used to find the “fun factor.”
  • Active Brainstorming & Pitches: Participate in team playtests and share ideas regarding gameplay feel, visual readability, mechanics design, and technical problem-solving.

Candidate Profile: Who You Are

Required Technical Expertise

  • Unreal Engine Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of Unreal Engine architecture, including advanced Material Editor graphs, Blueprints, Niagara VFX, Chaos Destruction tools, and overall engine optimization profiling.
  • Scripting Capabilities: Highly proficient in Python for automating asset processes, data manipulation, pipeline tool creation, or DCC software integration.
  • Material Authoring: Expert competency using Substance Designer and Substance Painter to create flexible, high-fidelity Physically Based Rendering (PBR) textures and underlying material behaviors.
  • Rendering Fundamentals: Deep understanding of real-time rendering pipelines, modern PBR lighting paradigms, vertex shader math, and GPU performant workflows.
  • 3D Content Creation: Practical, hands-on experience modeling, UV-unwrapping, and structuring 3D art assets within standard DCC applications (e.g., Maya, Blender).

Mindset & Collaboration Requirements

  • Passion for Gameplay Feel: A natural fascination with micro-interactions, weight, mechanical readability, and tactile player responses. You evaluate your work based on how good it feels to play, not just how nice it looks on a static monitor.
  • Prototyping Resilience: Comfortable with shifting design targets, loose boundaries, and evolutionary milestones. You are eager to build throwaway proof-of-concept assets to answer creative design questions quickly.
  • Strong Communication Skill: An approachable, highly collaborative professional who loves brainstorming in a multi-craft team and pitching fresh, creative design solutions.

Compensation, Contract Status, & Market Context

The estimated monthly salary for a Technical Artist on a fixed-term contract ranges from 45,000 SEK to 58,000 SEK gross (before income tax), determined individually by testing results and overall technical depth.

Key Local Clarifications

  • Fixed-Term Structural Nature: Because this is a temporary contract linked directly to a prototype incubation cycle, candidates should confirm during initial interviews how statutory vacation days, sick leaves, and individual insurance or pension schemes apply relative to temporary project regulations.
  • No Relocation Provision: Avalanche explicitly states that no relocation assistance or visa sponsorship is available for this contract. Candidates must be locally situated or manage their own relocation seamlessly while possessing the upfront legal right to work full-time in Sweden.

Commitment to Diversity & Alternative Backgrounds

A Direct Note on Qualifications ::

Academic research indicates that individuals from under-represented demographics within the technology and interactive entertainment industries frequently hesitate to apply for roles unless they fulfill every single qualification checklist perfectly.

Avalanche Studios Group explicitly rejects this rigid paradigm. Our priority centers on your creative drive, your technical curiosity, your unique problem-solving style, and your enthusiasm for building innovative prototypes. We value your continuous capacity for growth and real-world execution over a perfectly itemized resume. If you possess a deep passion for Technical Art and gameplay feel, we strongly encourage you to submit your application regardless of whether you meet every line item.

How to Apply

To initiate your application process, please register through our official careers portal and submit your detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Technical Portfolio/Showreel Link in English.

We review applicant submissions continuously. This position will close immediately upon identifying the appropriate candidate, making early submission highly advantageous. Please note that all subsequent project specifics, technical demonstrations, and studio infrastructures will be discussed exclusively under the protection of a binding Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
