Roblox is hiring Game Programmer, Singapore

The gaming landscape in Singapore has evolved into a powerhouse of innovation, where traditional high-fidelity engines like Unity and Unreal now sit alongside massive, community-driven platforms like Roblox. As the “Metaverse” and User-Generated Content (UGC) continue to redefine how the world plays, our studio is at the forefront of this shift. We are looking for a technically brilliant, highly adaptable Game Programmer Intern to join our Singapore-based development team.

This role is designed for a coder who is as comfortable writing high-level systems in Luau for Roblox as they are architecting gameplay in C# or C++. This is a 360-degree programming experience where you will be tasked with building, breaking, and refining game builds that will reach millions of players.

The Mission: Bridging Engines and Experiences

In today’s industry, a great programmer is more than just a specialist in one language; they are a polyglot who can apply engineering principles across various environments. As an intern, you will report to the Lead Programmer and support the development of both internal prototypes and live-service content.

A significant portion of your internship will focus on the Roblox Platform. You will learn how to navigate the unique constraints of Roblox Studio—handling server-client replication, optimizing for a global player base with varying hardware, and utilizing the DataStore for persistent player progress. Simultaneously, you will be expected to support our traditional engine pipelines, ensuring you leave this internship with a diverse and competitive skill set.

Key Responsibilities

1. Full-Stack Game Development

  • Feature Engineering: You will design, code, and implement gameplay features such as combat systems, inventory management, and interactive UI. On the Roblox side, this involves mastering Luau to create responsive and secure game logic.
  • Prototype Creation: Develop playable game builds from the ground up based on approved creative briefs. You will take a “blue-sky” idea and turn it into a functional “Greybox” build to prove the concept’s viability.
  • System Architecture: Work on backend systems including leaderboards, matchmaking logic, and in-game shop systems, ensuring they are robust enough to handle high-traffic spikes.

2. Debugging & Performance Optimization

  • The Hunt for Bugs: Conduct rigorous debugging and troubleshooting sessions. You will be expected to use profiling tools to identify memory leaks, “lag spikes,” and logic bottlenecks that hinder the player experience.
  • Network Replication: In the Roblox environment, you will specifically focus on optimizing the bridge between the server and the client to ensure smooth gameplay for players with high latency.
  • Troubleshooting: Resolve complex issues related to physics engines, collision detection, and frame-rate drops across different device tiers (Mobile vs. PC).

3. Quality Assurance & Player-Centric Data

  • Session Recording: Record detailed gameplay sessions to analyze how mechanics feel in practice versus how they look on paper.
  • Feedback Integration: Gather feedback from internal playtests and the community. You will be responsible for documenting these findings and proposing code-based solutions to improve the user experience (UX).
  • Documentation: Maintain a high standard of documentation for your code and key learnings. You will help build our internal “Knowledge Base” to ensure that future developers can understand and build upon your systems.

Detailed Job Requirements

We are seeking a candidate who doesn’t just “know how to code,” but someone who understands the philosophy of game development.

Technical Requirements:

  • Engine Proficiency: Demonstrable experience in Roblox Studio is a major advantage. You should also be proficient in either Unity (C#) or Unreal Engine (C++).
  • Programming Languages: A strong command of C#, C++, or Luau. If you are a Python or Java wizard, you must show a willingness and ability to pivot your logic into game-specific languages quickly.
  • Math for Games: You must be comfortable with the “unspoken language” of game dev: linear algebra, vectors, and quaternions. You’ll need these for everything from camera math to character movement.
  • Version Control: Familiarity with Git, SVN, or Perforce. You must understand how to work in a shared codebase without breaking everyone else’s work.

Soft Skills & Professionalism:

  • Communication: You can explain a “Race Condition” or a “Null Reference Exception” to a designer without using jargon. Collaboration is the heartbeat of our studio.
  • Time Management: We operate in a fast-paced environment with weekly deliverables. You need to be able to prioritize tasks effectively under the guidance of a Producer.
  • Problem-Solving: You don’t wait for the answer to be handed to you. You are a frequent visitor to Stack Overflow, the Roblox Developer Forum, and engine documentation.

Experience:

  • Portfolio: We prioritize work over words. Show us a game you’ve made, a script you’ve written for a Roblox game, or a complex system you’ve built for an academic project.

The “Roblox” Factor: Why it Matters

Roblox is no longer just a “kids’ game”; it is a sophisticated engine that requires a high level of technical skill. During your internship, you will dive deep into:

WhatsApp Group Join Now

  • The Client-Server Model: Understanding how to secure your games against “exploiters” and “hackers” by validating all player actions on the server.
  • The UGC Economy: Learning how to program systems that interact with the Roblox economy, including game passes and developer products.
  • Global Scaling: Writing code that works for 10 players or 10,000 players without crashing the instance.

What You Will Gain

This internship is a career-launching opportunity. By the end of your tenure, you will have:

  1. A Professional Portfolio Piece: You will have contributed code to a live or near-launch game build.
  2. Cross-Platform Expertise: You will be one of the few programmers who can jump between high-end game engines and the Roblox ecosystem seamlessly.
  3. Industry Mentorship: Daily access to senior engineers who will review your code and help you refine your logic and efficiency.
  4. Strategic Insight: An understanding of the “Business of Games”—how features are prioritized based on player retention and monetization data.

How to Apply

We are looking for the “Engineers of Fun.” To apply, please prepare the following:
1. Resume/CV: Standard professional format, focusing on your technical toolkit.
2. The “Dev Showreel”: A link to your GitHub, ArtStation (if you have technical art samples), or a specific Roblox Place ID that you have programmed.
3. Personal Statement: In 300 words or less, tell us about a bug that almost broke you, and how you eventually fixed it.

The Future of Play in Singapore

Our studio believes that the next great gaming revolution will come from the intersection of professional engineering and community creativity. As a Game Programmer Intern, you are at the very center of that intersection. We value diversity of thought, technical curiosity, and the courage to try new things—even if they result in a “Server Crash” during the first test.

If you are ready to stop just playing games and start building the systems that power them, we want to hear from you.

Join us in Singapore and let’s code the next big hit together.
