Core Responsibilities: What You’ll Do

As a Lighting TA (Technical Assistant), your daily workflow balances immediate artist support with long-term pipeline optimization. Your responsibilities are divided across four operational pillars:

1. Technical Support & Pipeline Troubleshooting

  • Artist Desk Support: Provide immediate, day-to-day front-line technical support for lighting artists. Act as the primary point of contact for resolving scene crashes, data corruption, and workspace anomalies.
  • Scene Debugging: Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve deep-seated scene performance issues, including broken geometry assets, missing texture dependencies, broken file referencing, and incorrect shading assignments.
  • Render Optimization: Isolate and fix complex render-farm errors, render layer conflicts, Arbitrary Output Variable (AOV) setup mistakes, and caching bottlenecks to ensure optimal throughput on the farm.

2. Asset Integration & Quality Assurance

  • Upstream Validation: Monitor and assist with the seamless ingestion of assets coming from upstream departments (such as Layout, Modeling, Matte Painting, and Animation) into active shot production.
  • Technical Compliance: Verify that incoming lighting files, light rigs, and render settings comply strictly with established global technical standards, asset version rules, and file naming conventions.
  • Artistic Alignment: Ensure that technical pipeline optimizations never compromise the established visual quality and creative goals set forth by the Art Director and Lighting Supervisor.

3. Scripting, Automation & Workflow R&D

  • Tool Development: Propose, draft, and develop custom scripts, plugins, and localized macros using Python and MEL to automate repetitive tasks and optimize artist workflows.
  • Pipeline Liaison: Partner closely with core Pipeline Developers to test, validate, and roll out studio-wide tool updates, ensuring changes do not disrupt active shot production.
  • R&D Evaluation: Continuously research and evaluate emerging rendering technologies, modern lighting tools, and external workflow enhancements to keep Bardel’s pipeline at the forefront of the industry.

4. Cross-Departmental Communication & Documentation

  • Cross-Craft Interfacing: Act as a critical communication liaison between the Lighting, Compositing, Rendering, and Pipeline Development teams, ensuring data flows smoothly down the pipe.
  • Knowledge Base Management: Write clear, concise, and highly visual technical documentation (such as wikis, video capture walkthroughs, and troubleshooting guides) to ensure efficient knowledge transfer across the crew.
  • Data Integrity: Track, log, and maintain asset histories, version updates, and shot statuses inside ShotGrid to guarantee overall data transparency.

Candidate Profile: Who You Are

Required Technical Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Automation Scripting: High proficiency in Python and MEL scripting, with an established ability to build lightweight tools, automate data processing, and customize DCC interfaces.
  • DCC & Render Architecture: A thorough, practical understanding of lighting and rendering workflows within Autodesk Maya, Blender, or comparable production-grade render systems.
  • Data Tracking Systems: Solid working familiarity with ShotGrid (formerly Shotgun) and standard studio asset-tracking paradigms.
  • Compositing Awareness: A foundational understanding of digital compositing applications (such as Foundry Nuke), with a clear grasp of how multi-channel lighting passes, AOVs, and deep pixels integrate into the final composite image.
  • Scene Management Literacy: Mastery over scene optimization techniques, including file referencing, proxy setups, level-of-detail (LOD) switching, and geometry caching formats (Alembic, USD).

Professional Soft Skills for Lighting TA

  • Collaborative Mindset: A proactive, highly resourceful team player who enjoys helping others and excels at cross-disciplinary communication.
  • Fast-Paced Resilience: The ability to remain calm, organized, and focused within a highly dynamic, fast-paced, and deadline-driven feature film production environment.
  • Clear Documentation Instincts: A structured approach to writing technical documentation, making complex engineering workflows easy for artistic teams to interpret. Quebec jobs
