Core Roles & Production Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a Senior Lighting Artist at Digital Domain go beyond simply placing digital light fixtures. You will be tasked with orchestrating the entire look of a sequence, solving data bottle-necks, and serving as the definitive quality control point before assets enter the compositing stage.
1. Aesthetic Mastery & Shot Execution
- Establish, execute, and maintain high-quality photorealistic lighting setups that match the physical attributes, color space, and atmosphere of live-action plates or established concept art.
- Replicate complex real-world cinematography by interpreting HDRIs, physical camera exposures, light temperatures, lens characteristics, and shadow qualities within 3D environments.
- Manage sequence-level lighting keys, ensuring continuity across hundreds of interconnected shots while adjusting to feedback from Visual Effects Supervisors and Clients.
2. Rendering Optimization & Technical Direction
- Take proactive ownership of render optimization, managing memory overhead, multi-bounce ray depths, and sampling thresholds to generate noise-free images within studio budget parameters.
- Set up, structure, and output deep compositing layers, multi-channel AOVs (Arbitrary Output Variables), and crypto-mattes to hand off highly organized files to the 2D Compositing department.
- Debug complex rendering anomalies, shader errors, and asset dependencies within local and cloud-based farm configurations under tight production timelines.
3. Pipeline Stewardship & Team Leadership
- Author, adapt, and refine modular Python or Lua automation scripts to automate repetitive lighting setups and optimize scene building workflows.
- Audit upstream asset handoffs (Geometry, Textures, Shading/LookDev, FX) to catch issues before they impact the lighting and rendering pipeline.
- Mentor, train, and structurally elevate junior and mid-tier lighting talent within the Hyderabad studio, fostering shared technical expertise and design excellence.
Required Technical Qualifications & Software Skillset
We seek artists who have refined their visual taste through years of observing light behavior in nature and film, combined with a granular technical grasp of computer graphics data architecture.
Minimum Professional Requirements
- Proven Track Record: Minimum of 6 years of experience working inside a major global VFX facility or premium feature-length animation studio environment.
- Cinematic Credential: A strong, comprehensive portfolio or showreel showcasing a wide array of photorealistic lighting styles, explicit shot breakdowns, sequence continuity samples, and evidence of managing rendering efficiency.
- Academic Baseline: A degree/diploma in Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, Photography, Cinematography, or a highly related equivalent field is heavily valued, though balanced by exceptional portfolio experience.
