Rigging at TDA is a blend of precision engineering and artistic intuition. If you have a deep understanding of how things move—from the complex mechanics of human anatomy to the fluid physics of visual effects—and you possess mastery over industry-standard vector tools, we invite you to build the digital skeletons that will power our next global hit.
The Role: The Architect of Movement
The Animate CC & Harmony Rigger at Top Draw Animation is responsible for converting client-provided designs into high-functioning digital assets. Your primary goal is to ensure that characters, props, and visual effects are “animation-ready.” This involves a meticulous process of tracing, breaking down assets into logical layers, and setting precise pivots to facilitate seamless movement.
In the world of professional 2D animation, a “Rig” is more than just a character model; it is a library of possibilities. You will be responsible for building and maintaining these libraries, ensuring that every hand pose, mouth shape, and special effects template is optimized for high-volume production. You are the gatekeeper of technical quality, ensuring that the creative vision of the client is translated into a functional digital reality.
Detailed Key Responsibilities
1. Digital Conversion & Vectorization
Vector Mastery: Convert image-based character designs, props, and libraries into clean, scalable vector files utilizing Toon Boom Harmony and Adobe Animate (Flash).
Precision Tracing: Maintain the integrity of the original line art while optimizing it for the technical requirements of the digital software.
2. Character Breakdown & Technical Setup
Layer Separation: Systematically break down characters and props into separate layers (arms, joints, facial features) following specific show requirements.
Pivot Point Optimization: Strategically set pivot points to allow for natural rotation and deformation, ensuring animators can achieve complex acting without “breaking” the character.
Anatomy Integration: Apply your knowledge of human and animal anatomy to ensure joints and muscles deform realistically during the animation process.
3. Library & Asset Management
Template Creation: Build and store valuable assets in the library, including optimized templates for main characters, reusable animation cycles, and effective filter setups.
Pose Libraries: Prepare and optimize approved special poses and hand drawings to ensure consistency across the entire production team.
Technical Maintenance: Update and refine rigs based on animator feedback to resolve “pops” or technical limitations discovered during the production phase.
4. Collaboration & Quality Control
Inter-Departmental Synergy: Collaborate closely with the Layout, Animation, and Build departments to ensure a smooth transition of assets through the pipeline.
Constructive Feedback: Actively participate in review sessions, giving and receiving feedback to ensure the rigs meet the TDA gold standard.
Deadline Management: Deliver high-quality rigs within strict production timelines, demonstrating effective time management and stress tolerance.
Comprehensive Requirements
To succeed at Top Draw Animation, a Rigger must be as comfortable with a node graph as they are with a drawing tablet.
A. Technical Competencies
Software Excellence: Professional-level proficiency in Toon Boom Harmony (Premium/Essentials) and Adobe Animate CC (Flash).
Photoshop Integration: Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop for processing source materials and textures.
Drawing Skills: Strong foundational drawing skills to assist in “fixing” or extending designs during the breakdown process.
Work Standards: A commitment to consistent quality and performance, even under the pressure of tight broadcast deadlines.
B. Motivational Fit & Soft Skills
Detail-Orientation: An obsession with technical cleanliness—every layer named, every pivot perfect.
Team Player: A collaborative spirit who values the success of the project as much as their own work.
Openness to Learning: A genuine desire to stay updated on new rigging techniques, software versions, and proprietary platform tools.
Resilience: Willingness to engage in challenging work, including potential long hours during peak delivery periods.
C. Knowledge & Experience
Experience: At least 1 year of professional experience specifically in 2D Rigging for TV, movies, or commercials.
Anatomical Knowledge: A strong understanding of Human and Animal anatomy is essential for logical joint placement and rigging.
Production Literacy: A solid understanding of the entire animation process, from storyboard to final composite.
Education: A Diploma or Degree in Animation, Media Arts, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or a related field.
