When you join us, you aren’t just an employee; you are a key contributor to an award-winning legacy.
Detailed Candidate Profile for 2D Lead
1. Professional Experience
The ideal candidate is a veteran of the VFX industry. You should have significant experience within a recognized VFX facility, backed by a filmography of “known” credits. We are looking for an artist who has transitioned from a Senior Compositor into a leadership role, demonstrating the ability to manage not just their own shots, but the collective output of a team.
2. Technical Mastery: The Nuke Expert
Nuke is the heart of our 2D pipeline. As a Lead, your knowledge must go beyond standard gizmos and nodes. You should understand:
Deep Compositing & 3D Workflows: Integrating complex CG passes with live-action plates.
Efficiency & Templating: Creating master scripts and templates to ensure look-consistency across a sequence.
Problem Solving: Designing the technical “approach” to shots that others might find impossible.
3. Leadership & Soft Skills
A 2D Lead at BlueBolt is a diplomat as much as an artist. You must possess:
A Critical Eye: The ability to spot a 1-pixel edge fringe or a slight black-level mismatch at a glance.
Pressure Management: The VFX industry is defined by deadlines. You must remain calm, logical, and decisive when the “turnaround” is tight.
Organizational Prowess: Monitoring shot progress and ensuring the 2D schedule aligns with the overall project roadmap.
Core Responsibilities as 2D Lead
Artistic Direction & Shot Execution
You will work in the “Engine Room” of the production. Your primary task is to take the vision of the VFX Supervisor and translate it into actionable steps for the compositing team. This involves:
Solving difficult technical challenges (e.g., complex extractions, high-end CG integration).
Giving clear, constructive artistic feedback to junior and mid-level artists.
Proactively identifying potential “bottlenecks” in the 2D pipeline before they delay production.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
VFX is a team sport. You will act as the primary liaison between the 2D department and:
The CG Supervisor: To ensure renders are delivered with the necessary AOVs and layers for maximum control.
The VFX Producer: To provide accurate time estimates and progress reports.
On-Set Teams: While not essential, your experience with on-set data (HDRI, lens grids, camera metadata) will help you troubleshoot shots more effectively.
Technical Workflow Breakdown
To succeed in this role, you should be familiar with the standard integration points of a high-end VFX pipeline.
The 2D Lead ensures that the transition from Matchmove/Layout through Lighting/Rendering and finally into Compositing is seamless. You will troubleshoot logic-based issues and ensure the final output is ready for the DI (Digital Intermediate) suite.
Why Apply?
BlueBolt offers a unique opportunity to work on “prestige” projects. We don’t just chase volume; we chase quality.
Award-Winning Pedigree: Work for a studio that is regularly nominated for BAFTAs and Emmys.
London Hub: Based in the heart of the world’s most vibrant VFX community.
Collaborative Spirit: We value “troubleshooting logically” over “working longer.” We want smart solutions that respect the artist’s work-life balance.
