Introduction: Revolutionizing the AAA Pipeline

At Sharkmob, we believe that the quality of a game is intrinsically linked to the quality of the tools and pipelines used to create it. We are currently deep in the development of Exoborne—a tactical, open-world extraction shooter that demands a robust, high-performance infrastructure. To support this vision, we are looking for a Build Engineer who is passionate about eliminating developer friction and optimizing the “inner loop” of game creation.

Whether you are a seasoned DevOps professional or a promising engineer early in your career with a fascination for automation, we want to hear from you. Your work will directly impact our ability to iterate faster, test smarter, and ultimately ship a world-class gaming experience.

The Role: Engineering the Engine’s Delivery

You will join our Engineering Team, a multidisciplinary group that serves as the technical backbone of the studio. As a Build Engineer, your primary objective is to make the process of building, packaging, and publishing the game as invisible and stable as possible. You are the mechanic for the factory that builds the game.

Key Areas of Impact

  1. Pipeline Design: You will collaborate with Lead Engineers to architect CI/CD flows that handle the massive data requirements of an Unreal Engine 5 project.
  2. Tooling Innovation: We aren’t afraid to move away from “the way things have always been done.” You will have the agency to select, build, or extend tools to solve unique bottlenecks.
  3. Friction Reduction: Every minute an artist or programmer waits for a build is a minute lost to creativity. You will hunt down inefficiencies and automate manual tasks to give that time back to the team.

Core Responsibilities as Build Engineer

  • Automated CI/CD Workflows: Design and maintain the pipelines that compile code, cook assets, and run automated tests. You’ll ensure that every “push” to source control is validated and ready for the next stage of production.
  • Release Management: Manage the packaging and publishing process for various platforms (PC and Console), ensuring stability across multiple environments.
  • Unreal Engine 5 Integration: Work within the UE5 ecosystem to extend engine functionality, specifically focusing on build scripts (UAT/UBT) and automated testing frameworks.
  • Custom Tooling Development: Develop internal utilities using C# or Python to simplify complex workflows for the wider dev team.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Assist in managing build agents and server configurations, ensuring the infrastructure is scalable and reproducible.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Act as a service-minded partner to all departments, helping troubleshoot build errors and educating the team on best practices for source control and automation.

Professional Requirements as Build Engineer

The Essentials

  • A Curious Mindset: You are naturally inclined to ask “How can we make this faster?” You have a background in DevOps, QA, platform engineering, or a related field (even if through personal projects).
  • Programming Proficiency: Solid skills in C# or Python. You should be comfortable writing clean, maintainable code for automation scripts and internal tools.
  • Version Control Mastery: Direct experience with Perforce (Helix Core) or Git. You understand branching strategies and how they intersect with build pipelines.
  • CI/CD Familiarity: Hands-on experience with tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or TeamCity. We value your understanding of the core concepts (triggers, artifacts, agents) over a specific number of years.
  • Communication: You are an effective communicator who can translate technical pipeline issues into understandable language for non-technical teammates.

The “Nice to Haves” (Bonus Points)

  • The Gaming Bug: Previous experience in the games industry is a major plus but not required.
  • Engine Knowledge: Familiarity with Unreal Engine 4/5 and its specific build tools.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Experience with solutions like Datadog or Grafana to track build health and server performance.
  • Configuration Management: Experience with Ansible, Chef, or Puppet for automated environment setup.

Work Environment

  • Flexible Hours: Start your day in a way that fits your life.

As an engineer here, you’ll be part of a thriving tech ecosystem while enjoying a cost of living that is significantly more manageable than Stockholm or London.

Application Process

If you are ready to help us build the future of extraction shooters, we’d love to see:

  1. Your CV: Detailing your experience with programming and CI/CD tools.
  2. A Brief Cover Letter: Tell us about a pipeline problem you solved or why you’re excited about build engineering in games.
  3. Code Samples (Optional): Links to GitHub or personal projects showing your work in Python or C#.
