Position Summary
As a Senior Generalist Asset Artist at One of Us, you are a master of the 3D pipeline. This role is designed for a versatile artist who can move seamlessly between high-detail character sculpting, intricate environment building, and complex prop creation. You are not just an individual contributor; you are a technical anchor for the team, providing oversight and mentorship while ensuring every asset is optimized for our sophisticated rendering workflows.
Core Responsibilities & Expectations
1. Advanced Asset Production
You will be responsible for the end-to-end creation of hero assets. This includes high-poly sculpting in ZBrush, retopology and hard-surface modeling in Maya, and world-class texturing in Mari or Substance. At the senior level, you are expected to deliver “production-ready” assets that require minimal intervention from leads, maintaining a high standard of artistic quality and technical accuracy.
2. Technical Oversight and Pipeline Integration
One of Us utilizes modern workflows, specifically focusing on USD (Universal Scene Description) pipelines. You will:
- Ensure all assets meet strict pipeline requirements for geometry and UV layout.
- Liaise with the Lookdev and Rigging departments to ensure assets transition smoothly through the pipe.
- Utilize your knowledge of Houdini and Nuke to troubleshoot complex asset issues that may arise during the lighting or compositing stages.
3. Mentorship and Leadership
Growth is a core value at our studio. You will play a pivotal role in the professional development of junior and mid-level artists. This involves:
- Conducting regular work-in-progress (WIP) reviews and providing constructive feedback.
- Leading by example through meticulous scene hygiene and organization.
- Assisting in the creation of internal documentation and tutorials to streamline onboarding and tool adoption.
4. Workflow Innovation
One of Us believe in working smarter. You will actively contribute to the improvement of our asset tools and templates. If you have experience with Python or MEL scripting, you will be encouraged to develop small-scale automation tools to solve common workflow bottlenecks, increasing the overall efficiency of the asset team.
Technical Requirements
- Software Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, Mari, and Substance Painter.
- Pipeline Literacy: A deep understanding of USD workflows and experience with modern render engines (e.g., Arnold, Renderman).
- Generalist Breadth: Professional experience in Houdini and Nuke is essential, as this role requires a holistic understanding of how assets impact the final frame.
- Scripting: Proficiency in Python or MEL is highly beneficial for automating repetitive tasks.
- Real-time: Exposure to real-time engines (Unreal Engine/Unity) is a significant plus as we explore new creative avenues.
Professional Attributes
- Communication: You must be an excellent communicator, capable of sharing technical information clearly and listening actively to creative direction from VFX Supervisors.
- Problem-Solving: A proactive approach to technical challenges is required. You should be the person who finds a way to make it work, even when the brief is complex.
- Time Management: The ability to prioritize tasks, meet tight deadlines, and escalate potential delays early is critical for maintaining production momentum.
- Cultural Fit: We value positive energy, kindness, and respect. One of Us is a collaborative environment where we focus on results while supporting one another.
