The Role of the 2D Animator
The primary mission of the 2D Animator at Boulder Media is to translate the vision of the animatic into a polished, final animation. You will be tasked with roughing, keying, and fully animating shots while strictly maintaining character models and emotional integrity.
Key Responsibilities of the 2D Animator
1. Creative Development & Execution A successful 2D artist must master the balance between technical constraints and artistic flair. You will:
Review all animatics provided by the Production Team to internalize the pacing and intent of every scene.
Create rough animation passes to establish the “soul” of the shot before moving to final cleanup.
Key out characters using strong silhouettes and a clear line of action to ensure the performance is readable and dynamic.
Utilize reference materials—including mirrors, photos, and stock images—to ground your posing in reality while maintaining the show’s specific style.
2. Technical Precision & Workflow
In a modern studio, an Animator must be as tech-savvy as they are artistic. Your day-to-day will involve:
Maintaining the integrity of character models throughout complex movements and emotional peaks.
Ensuring all produced animation is well-timed, featuring variety, contrast, and personality.
Adhering to strict naming conventions and file management protocols on servers and platforms like Ftrack.
Collaborating with the Pipeline Team to ensure your workflow is optimized for the downstream departments (Compositing/Post-Production).
3. Collaboration & Communication As a 2D Artist, you are part of a massive creative machine. Success requires:
Attending creative, production, and management meetings to stay updated on show expectations.
Communicating any technical concerns or deadline risks to team leads in a proactive, timely manner.
Addressing technical and creative retakes from Directors and Clients with accuracy and a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
Skills & Requirements for the 2D Animator
We are looking for an Animator who possesses a deep “toolkit” of skills. While technical proficiency is vital, we value the underlying principles of the craft.
Portfolio & Showreel: Your reel must demonstrate a high level of skill in character performance and a mastery of the 12 principles of animation.
Software Knowledge: While we provide training, a basic to advanced knowledge of Toon Boom Harmony is highly preferable for this pipeline.
Draftsmanship: A great aptitude for drawing, observation, and “keeping things on model” is non-negotiable.
Time Management: The ability to work within a weekly quota and meet rigorous production schedules is essential for every 2D Animator on our team.
Professionalism: You must be flexible, self-motivated, and fluent in English (both spoken and written).
