Layout Artist Role Overview
As a Layout Artist at Eyeline Studios, you are the digital cinematographer and architect of the shot. You hold a vital position in the VFX pipeline, serving as the bridge between pre-production (storyboards/previs) and final production. Your primary responsibility is to establish the visual narrative, shot sequence continuity, and overall presentation of a scene.
Using assets provided by the modeling department and camera tracks from the matchmove department, you will construct the foundational “rough pass” of a shot. This role requires a sophisticated understanding of lens choice, composition, and physical space. You aren’t just placing objects in a 3D environment; you are telling a story through staging and movement, ensuring that every component is perfectly packaged for downstream departments like Animation, Lighting, and Compositing to succeed.
Key Responsibilities as Layout Artist
I. Virtual Cinematography & Staging
Composition Excellence: Create visually striking and narratively effective compositions based on shot descriptions, director notes, and storyboards.
Reference Matching: Meticulously match established references, including 2D concept art, 3D previs, and practical plate photography to ensure stylistic consistency.
Environmental Integration: Seamlessly stitch plate-based live-action footage into full CG environments and vice versa, maintaining a flawless sense of space.
Scale & Continuity: Provide definitive proof of scale and maintain strict continuity within a virtual layout setup, ensuring characters and environments relate to each other logically across a sequence.
II. Technical Scene Assembly
Asset Packaging: Assemble the correct combination of high-resolution and proxy assets in a shot, preparing a clean “package” for use in downstream departments.
Virtual Set Dressing: Utilize set-dressing techniques to populate environments in a way that feels organic and supports the film’s aesthetic.
Technical Troubleshooting: Debug complex technical scene issues and escalate pipeline bottlenecks to the Lead or Supervisor as needed to maintain production momentum.
III. Storytelling Supplementation
Placeholder Animation: Supplement layout passes with simple but convincing animation to represent character action and timing.
Foundational Lighting & FX: Implement basic lighting and FX cues to aid in storytelling and provide a clear “mood” for supervisor reviews.
Feedback Loop: Proactively take direction and apply internal and client notes with speed and precision.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Professional Standards
Industry Tenure: Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of dedicated layout experience within a high-end visual effects environment (Feature Film or AAA Television).
Artistic Foundation: A background in traditional Fine Arts is highly preferred, demonstrating a thorough understanding of framing, the rule of thirds, and narrative composition.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Arts, Film, Animation, or a related field is preferred.
Technical Skills & Software
Core Expertise: Advanced software proficiency in Autodesk Maya is strictly required.
Secondary Tools: Basic to intermediate skills in 3ds Max, Adobe Photoshop, and Nuke are highly preferred.
Production Pipeline: Familiarity with Shotgrid (Shotgun) for task management and version tracking.
Scripting: Basic knowledge of scripting (Python/MEL) to assist in workflow automation is a significant “plus.”
Grounding in Animation: A solid understanding of animation principles (weight, timing, and silhouettes) for storytelling purposes.
Core Competencies
Attention to Detail: An unwavering eye for detail and a commitment to consistent quality assurance.
Team Synergy: Excellent interpersonal skills; a team player who maintains a positive attitude in a high-pressure production environment.
Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work independently when necessary.
Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to effectively translate creative notes into technical execution.
Work Environment & Location
This is an on-site, full-time position at our studio in Hyderabad, India.
Location Policy: We are currently only considering applicants who are either already based in Hyderabad or are fully prepared to relocate to the region.
Collaborative Space: As a Layout Artist, you will benefit from the real-time feedback and high-bandwidth collaboration that our on-site environment provides.
