1. Systems Design & Combat Mechanics

The core of an ARPG is its combat. You will be tasked with designing the systems that make every encounter in ancient Greece feel legendary.

  • Combat Design: Design and prototype enemy behaviors, player skills, and boss mechanics. You will focus on “readability”—ensuring players understand threats and opportunities in the heat of battle.
  • Ability Ecosystems: Create diverse skill sets that allow for “theory-crafting,” ensuring that different player builds are viable, fun, and balanced.
  • Overarching Systems: Beyond combat, you will design the “connective tissue” of the game, including crafting systems, loot tables, and economy balancing.

2. Technical Implementation

We believe that a designer’s vision is best realized when they can get their hands into the engine.

  • Unreal Engine Integration: You will work directly within Unreal Engine to bring your designs to life. This involves setting up data structures, tweaking variables, and ensuring that “game feel” matches the design documentation.
  • Scripting: Utilize scripting languages like LUA or AngelScript to implement complex logic for AI behaviors or intricate skill interactions.
  • Iteration: You will follow an iterative approach—prototyping a feature, testing it, receiving feedback, and refining it until it meets our high quality standards.

3. Documentation & Workflow Management

In a project as large as Titan Quest II, clarity is king.

  • Source of Truth: You will maintain detailed documentation using Confluence (for technical specs) and Miro (for visual flowcharts and systemic maps).
  • Tracking: Use Trello to manage your tasks, ensuring that the team is always aware of your progress and any potential blockers.
  • Clarity: Ensure that your designs are accessible to all departments, from Programmers who need technical logic to Artists who need visual context.

4. Cross-Department Collaboration

System Design does not happen in a vacuum. You will be a central hub of communication.

  • Stakeholder Alignment: Work with Producers to manage scope, Artists to ensure visual feedback, and Audio Designers to ensure that every mechanic has the satisfying “thud” or “zing” it deserves.
  • Feedback Loop: Actively participate in playtests and design reviews. You must be comfortable giving and receiving rigorous criticism to push the game toward excellence.

Professional Experience

  • Industry Background: Mid-level experience as a Game, Level, or Narrative Designer in a professional environment.
  • Shipped Titles: At least one shipped title (PC or Console) in a design role. High-quality, completed mod projects for major titles are also highly valued and counted as professional experience.
  • Genre Knowledge: You must be a “student of the genre.” We are looking for experienced players of ARPGs and RPGs (e.g., Diablo, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn). You should understand why these games work and where they can be improved.

Technical & Mathematical Skill

  • Balancing & Math: A solid grasp of game balancing and the related mathematics. You should be comfortable working with probability, scaling curves, and damage formulas.
  • Documentation Skills: The ability to communicate complex systemic ideas simply and effectively in writing and diagrams.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and spoken English skills are mandatory. You must be able to pitch an idea to a room and defend it with logic and data.

Bonus Qualifications (The “Nice to Haves”)

  • Engine Mastery: Direct experience with Unreal Engine is a significant advantage.
  • Scripting Proficiency: Previous experience using scripting languages to implement AI or gameplay content.
  • Language: While our studio language is English, German language skills are a plus for local integration in Munich.

  • Stability & Legacy: Join a stable, established studio under the THQ Nordic umbrella while working on a beloved, high-profile IP.
  • Work-Life Balance: We believe in sustainable development. While we are ambitious, we prioritize the mental and physical health of our team.
  • Professional Growth: You will work alongside industry veterans who are eager to mentor and share knowledge.
  • Flexibility: Remote work is not just a “perk” here; it is a fundamental part of our workflow. Whether you want to be in our beautiful Munich office or work from your home setup, we support you.
  • Innovation: We aren’t just making a “clone.” You will be encouraged to pitch ideas that innovate on the traditional ARPG formula.

The Industry Context: Why System Design Matters

In 2026, the ARPG market is more competitive than ever. Players have higher expectations for endgame loops, build diversity, and “live” balance updates. At Grimlore Games, the System Designer is the guardian of this player experience.

The challenge of Titan Quest II is to honor the ancient Greek setting and the tactical pacing of the original while introducing modern systems that satisfy the modern gamer. This requires a designer who is part-mathematician, part-psychologist, and part-storyteller. You aren’t just designing a game; you are designing a world of possibilities where player agency is the most important mechanic of all.

How to Apply

Please submit your CV and a Portfolio that demonstrates your systemic thinking (e.g., design documents, balancing spreadsheets, or videos of implemented features). In your cover letter, please tell us about one specific system in an RPG that you think is perfectly designed, and why.

Grimlore Games is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
