The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and technically brilliant FX Supervisor to lead our team in Sydney. In this critical leadership role, you will manage the day-to-day production needs of the FX department, ensuring the delivery of the highest-quality, photorealistic visual effects simulations.

You will play a pivotal role in the artistic and technical execution of our projects, working closely with the Producer, VFX Supervisor, Head of FX, and other departmental supervisors to achieve the creative vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead, manage, and mentor a team of FX Artists, providing expert guidance on both technical and artistic challenges.
  • Quality Assurance: Supervise the FX team to ensure all simulations meet the highest standards of photorealism and artistic quality.
  • Technical & Artistic Solutions: Proactively provide effective artistic and technical solutions to the FX team.
  • Project Management: Manage project timelines, balancing the need for exceptional quality with production constraints and deadlines.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-departmental supervision to ensure seamless integration of FX elements into the overall pipeline.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years experience as an FX TD combined with prior experience as an FX Supervisor in feature film VFX.
  • Extensive, expert knowledge of Houdini.
  • Proven experience in producing a broad range of photorealistic effects, including:
    • Smoke, Fire, Clouds, Water, Steam, and Explosions.
    • Experience with particle and voxel-based rendering.
  • A strong eye for detail, excellent sense of timing, and a deep understanding of physical simulation techniques and technologies in computer graphics.
  • Familiarity with pipeline issues and a strong aptitude for problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, mentoring, and training teams of FX Artists.
  • Exceptional balance of artistic skill and technical proficiency.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., Python, HScript, or Mel).
  • Experience in live-action FX work is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Maya and/or other equivalent 3D software.

Workplace Flexibility & Location

This is a permanent staff position based in Sydney, Australia. We operate a hybrid work model, and candidates must be available to work from the office at least two days per week to foster connection and collaboration. Relocation to Sydney is required if not currently based locally.
