Position: Senior/Mid Lighting Artist (Short-Term Contract)We are seeking talented and motivated Senior and Mid-Level Lighting Artists to join our dynamic VFX team on a short-term contract basis. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced professionals who possess a keen eye for detail, a solid technical foundation, and a deep understanding of lighting principles. As a Lighting Artist at PhantomFX, you will play a key role in defining the mood, depth, and realism of every shot. You’ll collaborate with lighting leads, compositors, and other departments to ensure each frame achieves the perfect balance of artistry and technical excellence. Key Responsibilities Assemble all the required elements for assigned shots, including assets, textures, and references, ensuring seamless integration within the production pipeline. Create light rigs and develop the look-dev for shots to achieve desired visual aesthetics. Demonstrate strong optimization and problem-solving skills to handle complex scenes efficiently. Possess a deep understanding of real-world lighting principles, surface behavior, and photographic concepts to create believable, natural illumination. Work within established show structures, schedules, and production deadlines while maintaining high creative and technical standards. Collaborate closely with Lighting Leads and Compositors to ensure consistent shot lighting and smooth handoffs within the pipeline. Follow creative direction and feedback provided by the Lighting Lead and CG Supervisor to achieve the visual targets for the project. Provide slap comps using AOVs (Arbitrary Output Variables) for internal review and approvals. Identify technical or creative issues early and propose effective solutions to maintain production flow. Stay updated with current industry lighting tools, workflows, and techniques to bring innovation into daily work. Requirements Experience: Mid-Level Lighting Artist: 3–5 years of relevant experience in a professional VFX environment. Senior Lighting Artist: 6–8 years of hands-on experience in feature film or high-end VFX production. Skills & Qualities: Strong knowledge of lighting, rendering, and compositing workflows within a production pipeline. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Maya, Houdini, Katana, Arnold, Redshift, or V-Ray. Excellent understanding of color theory, exposure, and photorealistic lighting. Ability to identify and troubleshoot technical problems efficiently. Strong communication and collaboration skills — capable of working closely with multiple departments. Able to adapt quickly to creative direction, production changes, and feedback loops. Positive attitude, proactive approach, and a strong sense of teamwork. Demonstrated ability to deliver complex and challenging shots within tight deadlines. Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining the highest visual quality standards.
