Role Overview:We are looking for a skilled Surfacing / Look Development / Shading Artist to support our upcoming CG feature film. In this role, you’ll be responsible for surfacing, shading, and look development of characters, environments, and props, helping bring our film’s artistic vision to life. What You’ll Do: Work on all aspects of surfacing, including texture painting, procedural texturing, shading, lookdev, grooming, instancing, UV layout, and sculpting. You may focus on characters or environments. Create high-quality, stylized textures—hand-painted or procedural—meeting production standards. Develop stylized but physically plausible shading and lookdev while adhering to department conventions. Interpret 2D designs, references, and artistic direction into 3D textures and surfaces while maintaining the original artistic intent. Ensure assigned work meets the expected quality and is delivered on schedule. Maintain open communication with Surfacing Leads, production teams, and other artists. Help establish and maintain a consistent style across the project. Collaborate with humility, openness, and respect for diverse perspectives. What You’ll Need: Passion for creating visually stunning CG objects, environments, and characters. Strong technical and visual skills with a solid understanding of art and design in animation. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to interpret design down to its fundamentals. 3+ years of experience in high-quality shading, surfacing, and texturing for animated features, VFX films, or high-end episodics. Proficiency with Mari and Maya; knowledge of shader creation and Houdini is a plus. Good understanding of lighting, color theory, and industry standards to complete tasks effectively. Ability to solve problems and work within technical pipelines. Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills (verbal, written, and online). Compensation & Benefits: Typical salary range: $80k–$160k CAD (reflects total compensation; no stock options). Create high-quality cycles and crowd animation to enhance the richness and believability of scenes. Support the team by performing aesthetic and technical fixes — including intersections, eyeline corrections, motion pops, and cloth adjustments. Participate in animation reviews to understand shot context and history, proactively identifying and addressing problem areas. Communicate fix trends, progress, and creative solutions to Animation Leads. Help prepare shots moving into and out of the animation department, ensuring a smooth handoff between teams. Maintain a spirit of collaboration, openness, and respect within the creative process. What You’ll Bring A solid grasp of core animation principles, along with a strong sense of story, timing, continuity, and appeal. Proven teamwork, creative problem-solving, and the ability to work independently when needed. A showreel (maximum 2 minutes) that highlights your best animation performances — including believable expressions, emotional nuance, physics, and character appeal. Proficiency in Maya or similar 3D animation software (preferred but not required). At least 1+ year of animation experience in feature films, VFX, TV, or games. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to take feedback constructively and contribute positively to team discussions. Adaptability to new workflows, tools, and production requirements.
