The Mission: Engineering the Creative Workflow

The Technical Compositor is a hybrid role that serves as the “engine room” for the Compositing Department. You will collaborate closely with the Compositing Supervisor and artists to bridge the gap between creative vision and technical execution. Your work ensures that the creative team can focus on the “art” while you handle the “architecture.”

Key Responsibilities: “What You’ll Do”

  • Tool & Gizmo Development: Design, build, and maintain production-ready tools and gizmos that meet the rigorous demands of feature-film animation.

  • Advanced Scripting: Utilize Python and Blink Script to create verifiable, reusable, and efficient scripts that optimize compositing setups.

  • Workflow Optimization: Actively identify bottlenecks in the pipeline and suggest continuous improvements to departmental workflows.

  • Creative Alignment: Work with the Comp Supervisor to determine the best technical approaches to satisfy complex creative design briefs.

  • Front-line Support: Act as the first point of technical contact for artists, troubleshooting broken assets, debugging shots, and solving general technical hurdles.

  • Documentation & Training: Create clear, concise documentation for every tool developed and lead training sessions to empower artists with new technical capabilities.

  • Quality Assurance: Perform rigorous quality control and peer reviews on all technical submissions to ensure they meet Netflix’s high technical specifications.

  • Deadline Management: Successfully manage internal development timelines, providing early warnings to the project team if technical delays are anticipated.

Qualifications: “What You’ll Need”

We are looking for a rare blend of artistic sensibility and computer science rigor. You should be as comfortable discussing color theory as you are discussing matrix transformations.

Education & Experience

  • Industry Tenure: Proven experience in a technical compositing role within the VFX or Feature Animation industries.

  • Academic Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Visualization, Animation, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).

Technical Requirements

  • Nuke Mastery: Deep, “under-the-hood” knowledge of The Foundry’s Nuke.

  • Programming Skills: Strong proficiency in Python for pipeline automation and Blink Script for image processing kernels.

  • Mathematical Expertise: * 2D/3D Math: Solid understanding of Matrix math (transformations, projections, camera/geometry manipulation).

    • Vector Math: Proficiency in normals, cross/dot products, and coordinate spaces.

  • Image Science: A strong grasp of filter algorithms, including blurs, sharpening, denoising, edge detection, and convolution kernels.

  • OS Environment: High comfort level working within a Linux-based production environment.

Professional Soft Skills

  • Communication: The ability to take a complex technical solution and explain it clearly to a non-technical artist.

  • Debugging Mindset: Exceptional skills in development testing and identifying the root cause of technical failures.

  • Prioritization: A keen sense of urgency and the ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously without missing deadlines.

Industry Context: The Rise of the Technical Compositor
