About Knack Studios Founded by filmmakers, Knack Studios operates on the principle that post-production should be an artistic collaboration, not just a service. In just seven years, we have scaled from a specialized unit to a multi-location powerhouse. Our Chennai headquarters spans 20,000 square feet, and our new Hyderabad unit is designed to be a hub for innovation in Visual Effects, Sound, and Color Grading. We are powered by technologies available for the first time in South India, ensuring that our artists have the tools they need to achieve “pixel-perfect” results. Detailed Role & Responsibilities The Paint & Prep Artist is the “unsung hero” of the VFX pipeline. Your work ensures that the canvas is clean for the Compositors and that the audience never sees the “strings” behind the movie magic. 1. Advanced Element Removal & Reconstruction Object Removal: Execute the seamless removal of wires, rigs, tracking markers, microphones, and crew reflections from complex live-action footage. Clean Plate Generation: Construct high-fidelity clean plates to support background reconstruction, often requiring the recreation of textures and lighting that were obscured by the original actors or equipment. Artifact Cleanup: Eliminate sensor dust, lens scratches, and digital artifacts while preserving the underlying film grain and skin textures. 2. Technical Prep & Stabilization Denoising & Regraining: Master the art of removing digital noise for clean painting and accurately reapplying grain to ensure the patch is indistinguishable from the original plate. Complex Stabilization: Apply advanced stabilization and “match-move” paint techniques to ensure that all digital repairs hold up under intense camera movement. Projection Workflows: Use 2D and 3D projection techniques (Nuke/Fusion) to map clean textures onto geometry, ensuring perspective and parallax are maintained. 3. Quality Control & Collaboration Integrity Checks: Perform rigorous self-QC to identify jitters, edge “boiling,” or color shifts that occur during the paint process. Departmental Synergy: Collaborate closely with the Roto and Compositing teams to ensure that the prepped backgrounds align perfectly with the foreground mattes. Workflow Optimization: Maintain organized script structures and strictly follow naming conventions to ensure a smooth hand-off within the studio pipeline. Candidate Profile: Skills & Attributes Technical Expertise Software Mastery: Professional-level proficiency in Foundry Nuke, Silhouette FX, and Mocha. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop for texture creation is essential. Visual Literacy: A deep understanding of light, shadow, and color. You must be able to match the “feel” of a shot, including its depth of field and motion blur. Problem Solving: The ability to decide when to use frame-by-frame painting versus a procedural or projection-based approach. The “Knack” DNA (Soft Skills) Self-Image: We are looking for Confident Go-getters. You take ownership of your shots and see them through to final approval. Traits: Persistence in the face of difficult retakes, a creative approach to technical hurdles, and an approachable personality that thrives in a team environment. Motives: We value those who are hungry for personal growth. Our “Win-Win-Win” philosophy ensures that as the studio succeeds and the client is happy, the artist also evolves. Qualifications Academic: A Diploma or Degree in Animation, VFX, Fine Arts, or a related field. Portfolio: A showreel showcasing “Before & After” breakdowns of clean plates, rig removals, and complex texture recreations is required. Why Join our Hyderabad Unit? Be a Foundation Member: Join our new Hyderabad facility at the ground level and help shape the culture of our newest hub. High-Profile Projects: Work on major titles across Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and more. Career Pathing: We actively promote from within, moving talented Prep artists into Compositing or Lead roles. Creative Freedom: While we follow strict standards, we encourage artists to find new, faster ways to achieve world-class results. Application Instructions Are you ready to make the invisible, visible? To apply for the Paint & Prep position at our Hyderabad unit: Prepare your CV highlighting your years of experience in a professional VFX environment. Provide a link to your Digital Showreel (Vimeo, YouTube, or SyncSketch). Include a brief note about your most challenging “Prep” shot and how you solved it. We are currently expanding our teams in Chennai and Hyderabad to accommodate a massive slate of upcoming projects across five major Indian languages. If you have a sharp eye for detail, a passion for precision, and a “Win-Win-Win” mindset, we want you to help us render dreams into reality. Rotot Artist Job Overview Company Name: Knack Studios Position: VFX Roto Artist (Junior & Mid-Level) Experience Required: 1 – 6 Years Employment Type: Full-Time Primary Locations: Chennai (Unit 1 & 2) & Hyderabad (New Facility) Work Mode: On-Site (Secured, State-of-the-Art Facilities) Industry: VFX & Post-Production Estimated Salary & Compensation Structure Note: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s technical test results, speed, and previous industry experience. Level Experience Estimated Annual CTC (INR) Primary Responsibility Junior Roto Artist 1 – 2 Years ₹2.5L – ₹4.0L Object isolation, basic motion blur Mid-Level Roto Artist 3 – 5 Years ₹4.5L – ₹7.5L Complex anatomy, hair, & high-motion tracking Senior/Lead Roto 6+ Years ₹8.0L – ₹12L+ Quality Control, Shot Breakdown, & Mentorship About Knack Studios In just seven years, Knack Studios has evolved from a boutique facility into a 20,000+ square foot powerhouse. Our mission is to provide filmmakers with equipment and technologies previously unavailable in South India. With 850+ successful projects in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada, we have become the preferred destination for directors who refuse to compromise on their artistic vision. Our integrated approach—spanning Sound, Color Grading, and VFX—ensures that your work as a Roto Artist is seamlessly transitioned into the final grade, contributing directly to the big-screen experience. The Role: Precision in Motion As a Roto Artist at Knack, you are responsible for the surgical isolation of elements within live-action footage. Your work provides the “mattes” that allow Compositors to place characters in new worlds. We are looking for artists who don’t just “trace,” but who understand the physics of movement and the nuances of light. Detailed Key Responsibilities 1. Technical Execution & Matte Creation Precision Isolation: Create highly accurate mattes and rotoscope shapes to isolate characters, vehicles, or complex organic objects from live-action plates. Anatomical Accuracy: Execute detailed “anatomy rotos,” ensuring that joints, muscle movements, and fine features (like hair and cloth) are respected in the silhouette. Complex Intersections: Manage shots where multiple elements overlap, ensuring that edges remain clean and jitter-free through the entire frame range. 2. Advanced Tracking & Motion Blur Movement Analysis: Analyze footage to determine the best tracking strategy (Point tracking, Planar tracking, or Mocha) to minimize manual keyframing. Temporal Consistency: Ensure all shapes are fixed and aligned frame-by-frame, eliminating “wobble” or “jitter” that could break the illusion in the final composite. Edge Blending: Manually apply motion blur or utilize spline-based techniques to match the camera’s shutter speed perfectly. Your goal is a pixel-perfect blend with the original plate. 3. Quality Control (QC) & Workflow Rigorous QC: Conduct self-checks based on the Knack Studios QC checklist. Ensure there are no “holes,” missing frames, or incorrect naming conventions before submission. Technical Troubleshooting: Identify and flag issues such as dropped frames, black frames, or incorrect aspect ratios at the start of the task to prevent downstream delays. Project Management: Update progress in real-time using our internal project management tools, ensuring that the Paint and Comp departments stay on schedule. Skills, Attributes & Qualifications Technical Requirements Software Proficiency: Deep expertise in industry-standard tools such as Silhouette FX, Mocha Pro, and Foundry Nuke. Detail Orientation: A near-obsessive focus on edge quality and the ability to maintain consistency across hundreds of frames. Alpha Channel Knowledge: Understanding how to deliver clean alpha channels with the correct bit depth and resolution. Behavioral Attributes Self-Image: You are a Confident Go-Getter. You don’t wait for problems to be solved for you; you find the solution. Traits: Persistence is key in Roto. You must be willing to learn new techniques and remain approachable during the “retake” process. Motives: We look for artists who are hungry for personal growth and subscribe to our Win-Win-Win Philosophy (Win for the Artist, Win for the Studio, Win for the Client). Educational Qualifications Academic: A Diploma or Degree in VFX, Animation, Fine Arts, or a related field. Portfolio: A professional showreel is mandatory. We want to see your “Before and After” (the original plate vs. the matte/overlay) to judge your edge accuracy and tracking stability. Why Choose Knack Studios? Filmmaker-Centric Culture: We aren’t just a “factory.” We are led by filmmakers who respect the craft of VFX. Growth Potential: With our new 6,000 sq. ft. Hyderabad facility, we are creating a pipeline for artists to move from Roto into Paint and eventually Compositing. Modern Infrastructure: Work in a secure, high-speed environment with the latest hardware and software licenses. Language Diversity: Gain experience working on a massive variety of film styles, from high-octane Bollywood action to nuanced regional cinema. How to Apply To join our Chennai or Hyderabad units, please submit your updated CV along with a link to your Showreel. Pro Tip: Your reel should ideally showcase a variety of challenges—human anatomy, fast-moving objects, and shots involving heavy motion blur or hair detail
