Detailed Role & Responsibilities

As a Compositor at Knack Studios, you are the final “chef” in the kitchen. You take the ingredients provided by the 3D, Paint, and Roto departments and blend them into a photorealistic masterpiece.

1. Technical Execution

  • Advanced Compositing: Seamlessly integrate live-action footage with CG elements, matte paintings, and effects.

  • Tracking & Matchmoving: Perform flawless 2D and 3D tracking to ensure all digital elements sit perfectly within the physical camera movement.

  • Keying & Extraction: Execute high-end chroma keying, preserving fine details like hair, glass transparency, and motion blur.

  • Optical Consistency: Match film grain, lens flares, and chromatic aberration to ensure the viewer cannot distinguish between reality and VFX.

2. Analytical & Workflow Management

  • Shot Analysis: Review frame ranges, input formats, and bit depths (e.g., EXR, DPX) to ensure the technical integrity of the pipeline.

  • Color Science: Maintain strict adherence to ACES or project-specific color spaces to ensure consistency from the compositor’s monitor to the grading suite.

  • Optimization: Implement creative scripts or gizmos to streamline repetitive tasks, allowing more time for artistic refinement.

3. Collaboration & Leadership

  • Cross-Department Synergy: Work closely with the Roto and Paint teams to provide feedback on masks and clean plates.

  • Pipeline Communication: Provide daily progress reports to VFX Supervisors and Leads, identifying potential “red flags” in a shot before they become bottlenecks.

  • Mentorship (For Seniors): Guide junior artists in troubleshooting complex shots and maintaining the studio’s high-quality standards.

Requirements: Skills & Qualifications

Technical Proficiency

  • Software Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of industry-standard compositing software (e.g., Foundry Nuke is preferred).

  • Deep Understanding of Light: A strong grasp of how light interacts with different surfaces and how to replicate that digitally.

  • Problem Solving: The ability to look at a “broken” shot and find a creative technical workaround.

Education & Experience

  • Academic Background: A Diploma or Degree in Animation, Visual Effects, Fine Arts, or a related technical field.

  • Industry Tenure: 2 to 6+ years of active experience in a professional VFX studio environment (Candidates with 1+ year of exceptional portfolio work will be considered for Junior roles).

Soft Skills & Cultural Fit

At Knack Studios, we hire for attitude and train for excellence. We are looking for:

  • The Go-Getter: A self-motivated individual who doesn’t wait for instructions when a solution is needed.

  • The Learner: Someone who stays updated with the latest AI-integration tools and compositing plugins.

  • The Win-Win-Win Philosopher: You believe that for you to win, the team and the client must also win.

Why Join Knack Studios?

  1. Cutting Edge Tech: Work with technologies available for the first time in South India.

  2. Diverse Portfolio: From gritty regional dramas to massive pan-Indian action spectacles, your reel will never be boring.

  3. Growth Trajectory: With our expansion into Hyderabad and a growing footprint in Hindi cinema, the opportunities for internal promotion are immense.

  4. Creative Environment: We are a studio built by filmmakers for filmmakers. We understand the art, not just the spreadsheets.

Application Process

  1. Portfolio Review: We will evaluate your showreel for technical precision (edges, color matching, and tracking).

  2. Technical Interview: A deep dive into your workflow and how you handle complex shot scenarios.

  3. Practical Test (Optional): You may be asked to complete a specific compositing task to demonstrate your speed and quality.

How to Apply: Please ensure your resume and a link to your latest breakdown reel are ready. Ensure all passwords for protected links (Vimeo/Google Drive) are provided in your application.
