The Role: Precision in Motion
As a Roto Artist at Knack, you are responsible for the surgical isolation of elements within live-action footage. Your work provides the “mattes” that allow Compositors to place characters in new worlds. We are looking for artists who don’t just “trace,” but who understand the physics of movement and the nuances of light.
Detailed Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Execution & Matte Creation
Precision Isolation: Create highly accurate mattes and rotoscope shapes to isolate characters, vehicles, or complex organic objects from live-action plates.
Anatomical Accuracy: Execute detailed “anatomy rotos,” ensuring that joints, muscle movements, and fine features (like hair and cloth) are respected in the silhouette.
Complex Intersections: Manage shots where multiple elements overlap, ensuring that edges remain clean and jitter-free through the entire frame range.
2. Advanced Tracking & Motion Blur
Movement Analysis: Analyze footage to determine the best tracking strategy (Point tracking, Planar tracking, or Mocha) to minimize manual keyframing.
Temporal Consistency: Ensure all shapes are fixed and aligned frame-by-frame, eliminating “wobble” or “jitter” that could break the illusion in the final composite.
Edge Blending: Manually apply motion blur or utilize spline-based techniques to match the camera’s shutter speed perfectly. Your goal is a pixel-perfect blend with the original plate.
3. Quality Control (QC) & Workflow
Rigorous QC: Conduct self-checks based on the Knack Studios QC checklist. Ensure there are no “holes,” missing frames, or incorrect naming conventions before submission.
Technical Troubleshooting: Identify and flag issues such as dropped frames, black frames, or incorrect aspect ratios at the start of the task to prevent downstream delays.
Project Management: Update progress in real-time using our internal project management tools, ensuring that the Paint and Comp departments stay on schedule.
Skills, Attributes & Qualifications
Technical Requirements
Software Proficiency: Deep expertise in industry-standard tools such as Silhouette FX, Mocha Pro, and Foundry Nuke.
Detail Orientation: A near-obsessive focus on edge quality and the ability to maintain consistency across hundreds of frames.
Alpha Channel Knowledge: Understanding how to deliver clean alpha channels with the correct bit depth and resolution.

Portfolio: A professional showreel is mandatory. We want to see your “Before and After” (the original plate vs. the matte/overlay) to judge your edge accuracy and tracking stability.
