At Climax Studios (MPG), we don’t just make games; we master the art of connection. We specialize in Co-Development and Full-Development partnerships with the world’s leading publishers. Our mission is to solve the most complex challenges in multiplayer gaming, from netcode optimization to the creation of “moment-to-moment” gameplay loops that feel seamless to millions of players simultaneously.

We were remote-friendly long before the world made it a necessity. We believe that creative brilliance flourishes when people are trusted, supported, and balanced.

  • A Diverse Global Team: We operate across 30+ countries, bringing a wealth of perspectives to every meeting.
  • Sustainability & Giving Back: We prioritize local communities and environmental responsibility.
  • Technical Excellence: We are industry veterans who thrive on “impossible” technical hurdles.

As a Technical Designer, you are the “glue” between the Design and Engineering departments. While a pure Designer focuses on the “what” and an Engineer focuses on the “how,” you focus on the implementation.

You will develop high-quality gameplay assemblies, iterate on playable experiences, and serve as a vital interface between teams. You will be responsible for ensuring that the creative vision is technically feasible and performant, maintaining the delicate balance between high-fidelity fun and technical stability.

Primary Responsibilities for Technical Designer

Core Technical Execution

  • Gameplay Prototyping: Rapidly develop and iterate on gameplay mechanics using UE4/UE5 Blueprints.
  • Scripted Events: Implement complex scripted sequences and narrative-driven gameplay moments that trigger flawlessly in a multiplayer environment.
  • Tool Development: Collaborate with engineers to design, test, and refine internal design tools, ensuring they are user-friendly for the wider design team.
  • Optimization: Review and refactor existing scripts to ensure they meet the rigorous performance standards required for AAA console and PC releases.

Collaboration & Strategy

  • Cross-Discipline Interface: Translate abstract design concepts into technical requirements for programmers, and explain technical constraints to creative leads.
  • Documentation: Maintain world-class wiki-based documentation and technical diagrams to ensure knowledge is shared across our global team.
  • Quality Advocacy: Embrace the MPG methodology by maintaining a deep understanding of the client’s specific design processes and advocating for the highest possible polish.

The Senior-Level Distinction

For candidates applying at the Senior level, expectations scale into leadership and high-level problem solving:

  • Feedback Synthesis: Take high-level, sometimes vague feedback from partners and “digest” it into actionable, technical task lists.
  • Mentorship: Disseminate best practices across the studio, helping junior designers level up their technical skills.
  • Stakeholder Management: Work directly with Production and Client Leads to ensure all deliverables reach “Release-Quality” standards on schedule.

Candidate Requirements as Technical Designer

Essential Qualifications

  • Professional Pedigree: At least one shipped AAA title or a minimum of two published titles in a Technical Design, Scripting, or Level Design capacity.
  • Engine Mastery: Expert-level proficiency with Unreal Engine (4 or 5), specifically within the Blueprint visual scripting system.
  • Scripting Literacy: Beyond visual scripting, you should have experience with at least one traditional programming or scripting language (e.g., C++, Python, Lua, or C#).
  • Analytical Mindset: A natural curiosity for how systems interact and a “problem-solver” personality.
  • Communication: The ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders clearly and concisely.

The “Bonus” Skills (Preferred)

  • Multiplayer Expertise: Experience navigating the specific pitfalls of multiplayer development (latency, replication, server-side logic).
  • Modern Toolsets: Familiarity with UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite), Verse, or the UE5 Scene Graph.
  • Economy & Meta: Understanding of Free-to-Play mechanics, monetization loops, or meta-game systems.
  • UX/UI Awareness: A foundational understanding of user interface and user experience design.

We provide a comprehensive package designed to support your career, your health, and your family.

  • Pension & Security: Robust pension schemes and life insurance for long-term peace of mind.

At MPG, you will be working with cutting-edge technology. Our “Service Type” for this role is categorized under Code, highlighting the technical rigour expected. You will likely interact with:

  • Version Control: Perforce (P4V) or Git.
  • Collaboration: Slack, Zoom, and Jira.
