The Mission 3D Environment Artist & Prop Artist

At the core of War Mechanic lies a world driven by machines—raw, functional, and worn by time. The objective of this role is to translate that vision into tangible, interactive environments. This is not a role limited to producing visually appealing renders; it is about constructing a believable world where every object contributes to the narrative.

You will be responsible for shaping the tactile experience of the environment. Surfaces should communicate material properties—cold steel, rusted iron, worn paint, and accumulated grime. Structures should feel engineered, not arbitrary. Each asset must tell a story of usage, damage, and repair, reinforcing the game’s industrial theme.

The environment is not just a backdrop; it is an active storytelling medium. Your work will define how players perceive and interact with the world.

Key Responsibilities as 3D Environment Artist & Prop Artist

Asset Creation

Design and develop high-quality 3D assets, including environment props, industrial machinery, and architectural elements. These assets must align with the visual language of War Mechanic, emphasizing functionality and realism. You will be expected to create both hero assets and modular components that can be reused across the environment.

Attention to detail is critical. Each model should reflect a clear understanding of how real-world objects are constructed and assembled. Mechanical accuracy, proportion, and scale must be maintained consistently across all assets.

Texturing & Material Development

Utilize physically based rendering (PBR) workflows to create realistic textures and materials. This includes developing surface details that reflect wear and tear, such as rust, scratches, oil stains, and environmental damage.

You will work extensively with tools such as Substance Painter and Substance Designer to produce high-quality materials. The goal is to ensure that every asset integrates seamlessly into the game world, both visually and technically.

Material consistency is essential. Surfaces must respond accurately to lighting conditions within the Unreal Engine environment, maintaining realism across different scenarios.

Optimization & Game Readiness

Ensure that all assets are optimized for real-time performance without compromising visual quality. This includes maintaining clean topology, efficient polygon usage, and well-structured UV layouts.

You will be responsible for creating LODs (Levels of Detail) where necessary and ensuring that assets meet performance benchmarks. Understanding the balance between fidelity and efficiency is crucial in this role.

Proper naming conventions, file organization, and adherence to pipeline standards are expected to ensure smooth integration into the production workflow.

Unreal Engine Integration

Import and implement assets within Unreal Engine, ensuring correct scale, orientation, and material setup. You will create and assign materials, adjust shader parameters, and ensure that assets function correctly within the game environment.

Basic familiarity with Blueprints is required for setting up simple interactive elements or material behaviors. You will collaborate with technical artists and developers to resolve any integration issues.

Collaboration with Level Design & Art Teams

Work closely with Level Designers to ensure that assets support gameplay and contribute to a cohesive world layout. You will participate in feedback sessions and iterate on assets based on design requirements.

Collaboration with other artists is essential to maintain visual consistency across the project. You will contribute to establishing and refining the art direction, ensuring that all assets align with the overall aesthetic vision.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Software Proficiency

  • Advanced expertise in Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max
  • Strong working knowledge of Substance Painter and Substance Designer
  • Experience with Unreal Engine asset integration and material setup

Hard-Surface Modeling Expertise

A strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in hard-surface modeling is essential. You should be comfortable creating complex mechanical forms, industrial structures, and detailed props.

Understanding of real-world manufacturing processes and mechanical design principles is highly valued. Your models should reflect structural logic and functional believability.

exturing & Material Knowledge

Proficiency in PBR workflows and material creation is required. You should be able to create textures that convey age, usage, and environmental effects with a high level of realism.

Attention to micro-detail and surface variation is critical in achieving the desired visual quality.

Artistic Vision (“The Eye”)

A deep understanding of industrial aesthetics is a key requirement. You should have the ability to analyze and replicate how machines are built, how materials degrade over time, and how environments evolve through use.

Strong composition, proportion, and design sensibility are expected. Your work should not only be technically sound but also visually compelling.

Technical Understanding

  • Knowledge of topology optimization and UV mapping techniques
  • Ability to troubleshoot shading, texturing, and geometry issues
  • Familiarity with real-time rendering constraints and performance considerations

Portfolio Requirement

Candidates must provide a professional portfolio showcasing hard-surface modeling and environment art. Platforms such as ArtStation are preferred. The portfolio should demonstrate:

  • High-quality mechanical or industrial assets
  • Strong material and texture work
  • Real-time engine presentation (preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on shipped games or real-time projects
  • Familiarity with modular environment design
  • Basic scripting or Blueprint knowledge in Unreal Engine
  • Understanding of lighting principles for environment presentation

Work Environment & Growth Opportunities

This role offers the opportunity to work on a visually distinct project that emphasizes realism and industrial storytelling. You will be part of a collaborative team focused on delivering high-quality content within a structured production pipeline.

Opportunities for growth include:

  • Advancing into Lead Environment Artist roles
  • Contributing to art direction and pipeline development
  • Expanding into technical art or environment design specializations

Summary

The 3D Environment Artist & Prop Artist role is central to building the world of War Mechanic. It requires a combination of artistic excellence, technical skill, and a deep appreciation for industrial design. The ideal candidate is someone who can transform mechanical concepts into immersive, story-driven environments.

This position is suited for professionals who take ownership of their work, value precision, and are committed to creating assets that enhance both visual quality and gameplay experience at Chronospace.
