Avalanche Studios Group is seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Senior Gameplay Programmer to join our Stockholm-based development team. This is a pivotal role dedicated to bridging the gap between abstract design concepts and tangible, high-octane gameplay. In this position, you will be instrumental in crafting the scripted and emergent content that defines our “Worlds Beyond Limits,” ensuring that every interaction—from the weight of a weapon to the complexity of a mission—feels responsive, polished, and, above all, fun.
As a Senior member of the team, you won’t just be writing code; you will be an architect of player experience. You will work across the entire codebase, touching systems that range from character physics to visual effects, all while mentoring the next generation of developers.

The core mission of a Senior Gameplay Programmer at Avalanche is to empower our creative departments. You will work hand-in-hand with designers to conceive and implement the systems that bring our game worlds to life. This role is unique in its breadth; one day you might be optimizing character mechanics, and the next you could be developing the underlying tools that allow designers to tweak and balance mission triggers without developer intervention.
Because we specialize in open-world games with high degrees of player agency, your code needs to be as robust as it is flexible. You will ensure that our “scripted” content feels organic and that our “emergent” systems interact in ways that surprise and delight the player.
1. Feature Development & Implementation
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Partner with animators to refine character movement, artists to integrate VFX, and designers to build combat systems and world activities.
- System Maintenance: Develop and maintain the essential tools and systems used by the design team to create missions and complex gameplay loops.
- Full-Stack Gameplay Coding: Navigate the codebase from low-level systems to high-level character interactions, including physics, weapons, and world-state management.
2. Technical Excellence & Code Quality
- Robust Architecting: Maintain a high standard of code quality, ensuring that new features are scalable and performant within a massive open-world environment.
- Code Reviews: Actively participate in the peer review process, providing constructive feedback to ensure project-wide stability and adherence to best practices.
- Shared Technology: Work within a development environment that utilizes shared code, contributing continuous improvements to our internal technical foundations.
3. Leadership & Mentorship
- Team Growth: Provide guidance and technical mentorship to less experienced programmers on the team, helping them navigate complex systems and improve their C++ proficiency.
- Process Improvement: Identify areas where the development pipeline can be streamlined and advocate for technical solutions that benefit the entire studio.
Avalanche Studios is looking for a programmer who combines deep technical knowledge with a passion for the “feel” of a game.
- C++ Mastery: You are highly proficient in C++ and understand how to write efficient code for real-time applications.
- Industry Veteran: You have significant experience working within the professional games industry, ideally having seen a product through a full development cycle from pre-production to launch.
- Gameplay Intuition: You have an innate “sense of fun.” You understand the difference between a mechanic that works and a mechanic that feels great to play.
- Systems Thinker: You possess a strong knowledge of gameplay systems, including AI, character controllers, physics integration, and player cameras.
- Collaborative Mindset: You have strong communication skills and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment where technical and creative goals often overlap.
- Bonus Points: Experience with in-house engines is a major plus, as is a background in developing for high-performance open-world titles.
Avalanche Studios Stockholm office is situated in Södermalm, the beating heart of the Nordic game development scene. The office environment is designed to reflect the very games we create—a physical representation where the lush, organic vegetation seen in theHunter: Call of the Wild meets the gritty, corroded metal aesthetics of Mad Max.
We operate a Hybrid Model that prioritizes both flexibility and face-to-face innovation. We require our team to be in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. These days are dedicated to high-bandwidth collaboration, creative brainstorming, and maintaining the social fabric of our team. The remaining days allow for focused, deep-work sessions from home.
At Avalanche Studios Group, our commitment to creating “worlds beyond limits” extends to our workplace culture. We believe that a diverse team is a stronger team.
- Inclusive Environment: We are dedicated to maintaining an open work environment where every “Avalancher” is treated with respect and equality, regardless of heritage, gender, or orientation.
- The “Drive to Learn” Rule: We recognize that under-represented groups often hesitate to apply if they don’t meet 100% of the criteria. Don’t let that stop you. We value your passion, your creativity, and your ability to learn more than an itemized list of qualifications. If you are excited about this role, we want to see your application.
- Fixed-Term Employment: This position is a fixed-term contract with a scheduled end date of March 31, 2027, making it an ideal opportunity for a high-impact contributor looking to work on a specific project milestone.
- Competitive Compensation: We offer a salary package that reflects your seniority and the critical nature of gameplay programming.
- Professional Impact: Contribute to an in-house tech stack and have a direct hand in shaping the mechanics of a major global title.
