Detailed Job Responsibilities
1. Managerial Leadership & People Development
As an Art Manager, your primary focus is the growth and morale of our talented artistic team:
- One-on-Ones: Conduct regular 1:1 meetings focused on individual performance, career growth, and team morale.
- Goal Setting: Set clear, actionable goals for art quality and team performance that align with both the specific project goals and the broader studio strategy.
- Career Pathing: Define and manage career development plans within the PCF IDP (Individual Development Plan) framework, providing structured feedback and coaching.
- Performance Calibration: Lead performance review cycles and calibration discussions to ensure fair and consistent leveling across the team.
- Mentorship: Coach reports on essential leadership skills, including delegation, decision-making, and professional communication.
- Recruitment & Onboarding: Support the hiring process by defining roles, conducting high-level interviews, and ensuring a smooth onboarding experience for new talent.
- Succession Planning: Build succession plans for key roles within the art department to mitigate delivery risks.
2. Quality Control & Discipline Oversight
You will act as the guardian of visual quality across multiple internal and external workstreams:
- Multidisciplinary Review: Own the daily quality control and review cadence for UI, Lighting, and VFX.
- Internal & External Synergy: Manage feedback loops for both internal teams and external development partners, ensuring consistency across all assets.
- Definition of Done: Establish and enforce “review-ready” and “definition of done” criteria, including naming conventions, packaging requirements, and technical dependencies.
- Predictable Quality: Run structured review cadences (daily/weekly/milestone gates) to ensure the project converges toward its quality targets in a predictable manner.
3. Project Strategy & Risk Management
Working at the intersection of Art and Production, you will protect the health of the build:
- Stakeholder Interface: Frequently interact with Art Directors and Technical Art Directors to follow up on actions, plan reviews, and align on technical needs.
- Risk Mitigation: Proactively surface potential risks to the schedule or quality and propose solutions with clear trade-offs (scope vs. schedule vs. quality).
- Process Scalability: Excel in a standards-driven environment, creating repeatable and scalable review processes that can handle the demands of a AAA production.
- Task Closure: Provide concise, actionable feedback and ensure task resolution through tracked systems, avoiding circular iteration and ambiguity.
Candidate Qualifications
Required Professional Experience
- AAA Pedigree: You must have experience building and delivering at least one AAA game from pre-production through to global launch.
- Industry Veteran: 7+ years in console or PC game development, with a significant portion of that time spent in a leadership or management capacity.
- Artistic Mastery: A strong portfolio demonstrating high-level creativity in one or more art disciplines (Modeling, Concept, Lighting, etc.) across various styles.
Core Technical & Artistic Skills
- Asset Pipeline Fluency: A comprehensive understanding of the entire asset creation process. You must be able to speak fluently with artists in every discipline to provide effective technical and aesthetic feedback.
- Software Expertise: Expert knowledge of Photoshop and a strong understanding of industry-standard packages like Maya, Max, and ZBrush.
- Engine Implementation: A technical mindset with direct experience implementing assets within modern game engines (Unreal Engine preferred).
- Art Theory: Deep understanding of composition, design elements, anatomy, and color theory.
- Balance: A proven ability to balance pure aesthetics with technical performance and gameplay usability.
Leadership Competencies
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are mandatory for collaborating with our international team.
- Conflict Resolution: Ability to resolve bugs, regressions, and team conflicts with a solution-oriented mindset.
- External Management: Experience managing external development (outsourcing) feedback loops, including delivering clear briefs and acceptance criteria.
