About MachineGames

Founded in 2010 by industry veterans, MachineGames is a studio that values the “craft.” We are a collective of seasoned, passionate developers who believe in fusing intense, visceral gameplay with immersive narratives. Our worlds are famous for their “tactile” feel—the sense that every lever, every stone, and every rusted pipe has a history.

Our headquarters is located in central Uppsala, a vibrant university city just 40 minutes north of Stockholm. Uppsala is a unique place to live and work, offering a historical heritage reaching back to pre-medieval times alongside a cutting-edge modern tech scene. We also maintain a satellite office in Sundsvall for those who prefer the rugged beauty of northern Sweden.

At MachineGames, we operate with a “no-ego” philosophy. We believe that the best creative results come from a place of mutual respect and shared accountability.

Core Responsibilities

As a Senior Environment Artist, you are responsible for the aesthetic and technical integrity of the game’s world. Your focus will be on high-quality material creation and cohesive environmental storytelling.

1. End-to-End Environment Pipeline

  • Asset Creation: Design and execute high-fidelity 3D assets and modular kits that allow for varied, non-repetitive environment building.

  • Material & Texture Focus: Lead the charge in creating photorealistic textures and PBR materials that react realistically to the game’s lighting.

  • World Building: Take ownership of entire levels, from the initial block-out and architectural layout to final set dressing and large-scale composition.

2. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Level Design & Gameplay: Work hand-in-hand with Level Designers to ensure that environments are not just beautiful, but also functional, respecting gameplay flow and player movement.

  • Tech & Lighting: Partner with the technical art and lighting teams to ensure environments are optimized for performance while maintaining the highest possible visual fidelity.

  • VFX & Animation: Coordinate with the “action” teams to ensure environmental destruction or interactive elements are integrated seamlessly.

3. Leadership & Iteration

  • Mentorship: Share your deep industry knowledge with junior and mid-level artists, helping to elevate the skill floor of the entire department.

  • Artistic Refinement: Work with the World Art Director to continually revise and polish environments, incorporating drama and environmental storytelling into every corner of the map.

  • Technical Stewardship: Stay updated on industry advancements (such as photogrammetry or procedural workflows) and help implement them into the MachineGames pipeline.

Required Qualifications

We are looking for an artist who has spent years honing their craft in the AAA space.

  • Industry Experience: You have several shipped AAA titles under your belt and understand the rigors of a full production cycle.
  • Material Mastery: A standout ability to create textures and materials that define the “look” of a world. You should be an expert in PBR workflows.
  • Visual Hierarchy: A sophisticated understanding of composition, focal points, and how to guide the player’s eye through complex environments.
  • Software Expertise: Expert-level proficiency in industry-standard modeling (Maya/3ds Max/Blender), sculpting (ZBrush), and texturing (Substance Suite) software.
  • Technical Acumen: You understand performance budgets, draw calls, and memory constraints. You can make a level look like a million dollars while it runs at a rock-solid framerate.
  • Communication: Fluency in English is required, as you will be communicating complex artistic and technical ideas to a diverse international team.

Preferred Skills

  • Photogrammetry: Experience with scan-based workflows for realistic asset creation.
  • Level Design: A background or strong interest in the mechanical side of level design.
  • Proprietary Engines: Experience working with idTech or other high-end proprietary game editors.

Our Cultural Foundation

Our studio legacy is built on a set of core values that guide our everyday work:

  1. Team over Individual: We prioritize the collective output over personal glory.
  2. Open Door Policy: Transparency and accessibility are key to our creative process.
  3. Reliability: We deliver on our promises to our players and our teammates.
  4. Actionable Feedback: We believe in honest, constructive critique to push quality higher.
  5. Accountability: We take full ownership of our successes and our mistakes.
