The Role: Unity VFX Artist (Contractor)
We are seeking a talented, versatile, and forward-thinking Unity VFX Artist to join our dedicated Visual Effects department. In this role, you will bridge the gap between artistic vision and technical execution. You will be responsible for designing, simulating, and implementing a wide array of visual effects that ground our stories, elevate our action sequences, and breathe life into our environments.
This is a Contractor position offering a flexible Hybrid work model. You can collaborate with us directly from our beautiful studio space in Outremont, Quebec, or work entirely remotely from anywhere within the province of Quebec, Canada.
Core Responsibilities
1. Conceptualization & Effect Creation
- Stylized & Realistic FX: Design and execute stunning visual effects—ranging from highly stylized, artistic simulations to gritty, photorealistic elements. This includes but is not limited to environmental particle systems (dust motes, fog, wind), elemental simulations (water, fire, smoke), and dynamic interaction effects (impacts, magical trails, explosions).
- Asset Integration: Ensure that all FX assets seamlessly integrate with characters, environmental assets, and dynamic props, maintaining physical or stylistic plausibility within the universe of the project.
- Look Development: Participate actively in the early stages of look development, creating prototypes and concept effects to help define the visual language of new intellectual properties.
2. Optimization & Technical Pipeline Integration
- Cross-Platform Performance: Profile, optimize, and refine visual effects to ensure they perform flawlessly across various target platforms and rendering budgets without sacrificing artistic integrity.
- Engine Management: Work closely with technical directors to integrate complex simulations into the real-time pipeline, ensuring shaders, textures, and particle counts are optimized for engine efficiency.
- Tool & Workflow Improvement: Identify bottlenecks in the current VFX pipeline and suggest tool modifications or script workflows to streamline asset creation.
3. Artistic Consistency & Quality Assurance
- Visual Harmony: Maintain a keen eye for composition, color theory, timing, and scale to guarantee that all visual effects align perfectly with the established art direction of the project.
- Peer Reviews & Continuity: Review your work regularly within the context of the broader production to ensure continuity across different sequences, episodes, or cinematic cuts.
- Iterative Polish: Take constructive feedback from Art Directors, Directors, and VFX Supervisors, iterating rapidly to elevate the final visual quality of the project.
Skills & Qualifications
Required Technical Expertise
- Proven VFX Experience: A strong, diverse portfolio or demo reel demonstrating proven experience creating high-quality visual effects for animated series, feature-length films, or high-end video games.
- Houdini Proficiency: Expert-level mastery of VFX creation tools, specifically Houdini (including FX networks, dynamics, Pyro, and liquid simulations).
- Unity Engine Mastery: Deep, hands-on experience with Unity for real-time effects creation and integration (using Shuriken, Visual Effect Graph, and Shader Graph) is considered a major asset for this role.
- Shader & Material Knowledge: A strong understanding of real-time math, vector operations, and shader logic to create custom materials that elevate particle systems.
Problem-Solving & Soft Skills
- Technical Troubleshooting: The ability to independently diagnose, debug, and resolve complex technical problems within the art pipeline or rendering engine.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: A proven track record of collaborating effectively with animators, lighting artists, technical directors, and programmers to achieve a unified vision.
- Communication & Teamwork: Exceptional communication skills in English and/or French, alongside a collaborative, proactive mindset that thrives within a team-oriented studio environment.
